Wetlands Presents Piney ' Show Sat. t

e • STONE HARBOR - The \ single most unique natural area in the state of NewJersey will be the focus of a slide talk "presentation this week at the Wetlands Institute and museum. ^ Philadelphia botanist and historian Ted Gordon will narrate "The Lure of the Pine Barrens" at the Institute's Marshview Hall at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. The program will feature habitats and rare or endangered plants and animals of the Pine Barrens as well as historical highlights of the area. Col- - or slides will show the full range of seasons in this ~"| nearby natural wonder where a number of living things are making their last stand. Princeton author John McPhee alerted the nation to the legends and ways of life in the remote NewJersey woods through his 1967 book "The Pine Barrens." The story, a series of reports on his visits there, was originally published in The New Yorker magazine and caught the fancy of Americans who had imagined New Jersey to be one long paved turnpike bordered by city after city and situated next to Newark Airport. His compassionate portrayals of the isolated people and their folklore as wel^as his descriptions of the animal and plant life won attention J from the state legislature, which later passed laws to protect and preserve the wild, sandy area which contains an immense'fresh water aquifer. AS THE NORTHERN

and southern-most range of many East Coast plants and animals, the Pine Barrens is a jewel for naturalists. The most celebrated rare species is Anderson's tree frog, a tiny but handsome bright green creature trimmed in white with lavender leg stripes. The curly grass fern and goldcrest are among Barren's botanical treasures along with scores of tiny wild orchids. Among the many legends, that of the Jersey Devil, also known as Leeds' Devil, has fascinated thousands. The devil-beast is said to have combined the features of a bat and a kangaroo and to have committed many atrocities. For further information, call 368-1211.
