Landfill \ Extended By BPU I NEWARK - The Board of Public Utilities has voted to seek - the continued I operation of the Foundations and Structures gar- I bage landfill in Cape May I County for a period of not I more than 180 days, to I allow it to raise sufficient I revenues t^ support costs I of a proper closure. ] The board approved an i amendment to its solid waste flow rules allowing the landfill to remain open past the start-up date of the new Cape May County regional landfill, now scheduled for May 15, in order to raise funds for closure. The landfill company has stated a cost of approximately $2 million for proper closure of the landfill, and is seeking a rate increase from the board to pay for it. UNDER THE present state solid waste flow plan, approved jointly by the board and the Department of Environmental Protection and supported by Cape May County, all garbage collected within the county will be directed to the county regional landfill at the time it goes into service. The board said, however, it has the responsibility to seek changes to the solid waste flow plan is necessary' to protect the ability of any one landfill to provide a needed service, *" and certain expenditures, ' of an amount still to be determined, would be necessary for the landfill to meet DE? standards on closure and post-closure maintenance. The board said it would be "impossible" for it to devise rates to raise the needed closure funds with a month of remaining life. Department of Environmental Protection concurrence in the Board's position is necessary for the landfill to remain open. The landfill, which is located in Woodbine-, receives garbage from the towns of Avalon, Sea Isle City, aod Woodbine, in Cape May County.
