i WCHS Fights I Abuse With I Pilot Program

' WILDWOOD - As the nation-wide problem of drug and alcohol abuse continues, educators, substance abuse counsellors, governmental agencies and community groups combine their talents and resources to combat this situation. "One of the most effective and well-coordinated efforts was developed in the Diocese of Camden at Wildwood Catholic High School." according' to the diocese. Working with school personnel and governmental organizations, the members of the Substance Abuse Department of the diocesan Catholic Social Services Office developed an abuse prevention program. At Wildwood Catholic, a six-week course is being given to the 111 members of the freshman class. The project is part of a state-mandatea health cirriculum studies program. This program, when finalized in the coming months, will be evaluated ' and carefully tailored for use in the diocese's seven other high schools. RICHARD WHKLAN. coordinator of the Substance Abuse Prevention Program, stated that the pilot program at Wildwood Catholic involves cooperative efforts of several school staff, members, the entire staff ol his department, parent organizations and interested students. "We chose Wildwood Catholic as the site of our pilot program for several reasons." noted Whelan. -v "The substance abuse proy blem is certainly no greater here than at any other high school and is probably a good deal less. > Ttip school community itself, however, has always j demonstrated an interest i in sponsoring drug and alcohol prevention pro- ' grams for its students. I staff and parents, and has t ken a leadership role in 1 that area. "In addition, community groups and parishes in the Wildwood area have worked very hard in presenting awareness seminars and other related programs to interested persons. We have also implemented many of our own Substance Abuse Department educational programs here in the past." he explained. "Finally, the school population at Wildwood Catholic is small compared to other diocesan high schools, thus providing us with a more manageable group of students as far as numbers and follow-up reports are concerned." said Whelan. Sister Deanna Helm, SSJ, the guidance director at Wildwood Catholic High School, is involved in many of the substance abuse programs presented at the school and neighboring parishes. "Our school program has been well received by students, faculty and parents." she said. "In ad- ; dition to the health cur- ! — yieukim, we are using films

and discussions in our religion classes to instruct the students in the manyaspects of drug -and alcohol abuse." SISTER DEANNA said t h^t two awareness seminars have already been held at Wildwood Catholic and St. Ann parish in Wildwood and another is planned for the near future. "Our first program dealt with alcohol abuse, while ouri mast recent presentation was" on the dangers of marijuana." she stated. "Ed Olwell. director.of the Wildwood chapter of "Operation Junction.' worked with us in putting on the signs and symptoms of marijuana use. peer pressure, what to do if your friends use it and other related topics. "We alsc had a representative of the North Wildwood Juvenile Department at the seminar who explained the physical properties of the drug and showed some of the paraphernalia associated with drug and alcohol abuse." ) For more information on these continuing programs, contact Sister Deanna at 522-7257. or Richard Whelan at 541-2100.
