Coast Guard Cites Cape Group
CAPE MAY - Coast Guard group Cape May was awarded the Coast Guard meritorious unit commendation April 19. Cpt. D. Ramsden, representing the third coast guard district commander. Cape May. ' during an awards ceremony at the Coast Guard base attended by all group units. The commendation was awarded for meritorious service between January and May 1983. During this period, group *Cape May and its units in southern New Jersey and Delaware y responded to 219 search and rescue cases — saving 41 lives anc^ property valued at more than $25,000,000 dollars and assisting 71 others and property . valued at more than $16,000,000 dollars. Group Cape May personnel distinguished themselves in several missions involving search and rescue, law enforcement, and operational readiness. Boatswain mates second class (BM2) Spencer T. 2 Lynch of north Cape May and firemen apprentice (FA) Timothy L. McLaughlin of Cape May were awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for their superior performance of duty while assigned at Coast Guard search and rescue detachment. Forthescue. Machinery technician third class ( MK3 ) Jon E. ' . Durham of Station Indian River and Rehobeth, Delaware was also awarded the Coast Guard Achievement Medal for outstanding performance of duty. While at Fortesque last summer, Lynch and McLaughlin provided first aid to a critically burned four-year-old child, and helped put out the fire in the huse which had spread J from"" a mattress.y On | another occasion both men administered 1 cardiopulmonary ] resuscitation (CPR) and revitalized a 62-year-old heart attack victim. . Durham was cited for his performance as the contract inspector at a ship yard. Durham spent many extra hours ensuring the
satisfactory completion of technically complicated structural work to the
station's 41-foot patrol boat, and saved the coast guard money. f
