Wetland' s to Offer Courses
STONE HARBOR - New Jersey school teachers can study and receive credit by the sea if they register early with the Wetlands Institute this year. Three two-week summer courses, "Kaleidoscope of Science I, II and III" will be offered for the first time at the Wetlands Institute and museum in July and August. The courses will provide an overview of today's science explosion. Participants will have a look at space flight, astronomy, satellite imagery, space careers, acid rain, forest resources, wildlife, physics, geology, chemistry, ecology and the environment. Science career options and science for students in each teacher's community will be discussed. EMPHASIS WILL be placed on makyig science fascinating to students. Hands-on activities and new content will be taught. There will be science teaching-issue workshops to learn solutions to administrati ve/scl .ool board questions and to develop an individual science teaching style that works for each participant. New curriculm materials and textbooks will be featured, and authors as well as publishers, video and broadcast representatives will be present when possible. A number of experts in physical and life sciences will be teaching "Kaleidoscope of Science." Instructors will be from
NASA, New Jerso Science Teachers Association, National Association of Biology Teachers Department of Environmental Protection, Stockton State College, Atlantic Electric Co. and the Wetlands Institute. Critical thinking skills will be taught by J. Ross, an educator renowned for her work in this field. The proposed program is endorsed by representatives of NJSTA, NABT, NJEA, the Southern Regional Superintendent's office and the Soiithem Regional RCSU. A "BONUS OF the twoweek programs will be that early registration can win a low cost dormitory room with kitchen facilities in the Wetlands Institute's cedar shake building surrounded by 6,000 acres of salt marsh, only one mile from the ocean beach. Classes will be limited to 22 students The "Kaleidoscope of Science" courses will be held b^ grade category. Teachers of kindergarten through third will attend sessions I from July 15 to 27; teachers for grades four through six will be offered Kaleidoscope II from July 29 to Aug. 10; and teachers of seventh and eighth graders will want the final session III, held Aug. 19-31. Graduate credit information, in-service credit details and program fees are available from a free folder provided by the Wetlands Institute. If a recent grant application to cover costs and teacher
fees is won by the institute, attendance for qualified students may be free this year. Applicants will be notified this summer. THE INSTITUTE is a non-profit, private I organization dedicated to the promotion of public understanding of ana concern for the coastal ecosystem. It is open to the public Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until June, when it will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays. The building features an observation tower, Wetlandia Museum, nature 1 bookshop, laboratories and dormitories. A salt marsh trail on the premises is open to the public yearround. There is no admission fee to the museum or trail.
