Instead of reviewing records this week, I thought I'd discuss some of the excellent music-related books that have been published this year. There used to be a time that the only books dealing with rock and roll were flimsy, inane biographies, written to cash in on the success of a particular artist. Those types of books still i exist, but there are also some extremely wellwritten works that can be either read for enjoyment or used for reference. Chqjrk some of these out, as I think you'll be pleased The Beatles have had 1 more books written about 1 them than any other pop artist. Some are pure garbage, but others are quite ] informative For < reference, nothing matches l J J . i l
the four volumes published j by Pierian Press (P.O. Box \ 1808, Ann Arbor, MI. 48106). All Together Now and The Beatles Again? list all Beatles related records that were officially released (offshoots, guest appearances on other artists' records, etc. You Can't Do That ! covers bootlegs and I guarantee it'll drive all serious Beatle collectors crazy. THERE'S NO way a fan will be able to obtain all these lost treasures, so get second-hand enjoyment from reading about them. Collecting The Beatles covers things such as Beatles memorabilia. I only wish there were more pictures and that they didn't try to be a price guide. These are all hardcover books, so the prices { are high, but a true Beatles f fan wouldn't wnat to be ' without them. Excellent job, Pierta n'
David Bacon and Norman Maslov went to England and photographed all the old haunts of the Beatles and called their book The Beatles' England (910 Press. P.O. Box 22361, San Francisco. CA.y&4122>. These are beautifully shot photos. Besides their own pictures; they've included some rare - ones of The Beatles. It'll bring back fine memories for Beatles' fans. They All Sang On The Corner by Philip Groia is a work that was certainly ) needed. This is a history of New York's rhythm and blues groups from the 50s and 60s. Besid the amount of information on artists/labels/concerts that Groia has provided he's also dug up some vintage photos. Anyone who pines for those days of soulful harmony will want ' to order this from Phillie Dee Enterprises, 800 Myrna Dr., West Hempstead. N Y. 11552. They All Sang On The Corner is one of my personal favorites, and I'm positive others will cherish it as much as I do. More music books in a couple of weeks. Happy reading. "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" <CBS> is another fun release by Slade. It varies between I the usual powerhouse rock and roll of tunes like "Run Runaway" and "Slam The Hammer Down" and soft pop like "My Oh My" and *C*est La Vie." Lead vocalist Noddy Holder is in five voice ahd the bank, keeps the energy level high. Slade has always combined the power of the best heavy metal with infectious melodies and it's about time they found some commercial success in this country.
