Marine Sweeps Buck

CAPE MAY - The first match pitted Marine National Bank against Buck's Electrofiers in Coed Recreational Volleyball League action last Wednesday. Marine's Shep Taylor served for six consecutive points to give his team a 10-4 lead in game one. Buck's came back to bring the score to 10-8 behind fine court coverage. Marine broadened their lead to 12-8 behind some nice net play by Francine Satterfield. Buck's could only manage three points for the remainder of the game as Marine prevailed 15-11. Game two was close until Marine's Joe Gleason served his team to a commanding 12-6 lead. Nice bumps by Pete Kakoyannis and spikes by Rudy Wilson brought Buck's to within two points of Marine at 12-10 before Marine shut them down and cruised to the victory 15-10.. Buck's took control of game three in the early going as they jumped out to a 9-1 lead behind seven consecutive serves by Beth Shaffer. Marine then completely shut them down as they only allowed Buck's one more point for the remainder of the game to complete the sweep 15-10 SECOND-PLACE Sonal Offshore Drilling team took on the Shire in the second pairing of the evening. The Shire got out of the gate quickly in game one as they took an early 8-2 lead behind some nice bumps supplied by Jean Lloyd. Good net coverage by Sonat's Paul King brought them right back as Sonat closed the score to 8-6. The Shire broadened their lead to 9-6 before Sonat made a run at them and took over the lead for the first time 10-9. Dependable serving on the part of the Shire's Tom Whiteman gave them the 15-10 win. Sonat took their revenge out on the Shire in game two as they trounced the Shire 15-1 behind the booming serves of John Sim. The Shire regained their composure in game three as they led comfortably in the early going 11-4. Sonat's excellent court coverage earned them four quick points to close the score to 11-8 before the Shire returned the favor to take the contest to game point at 14-8. The Shire's defense then fell completely apart as Sonat got their second wind and secured the win 16-14. Cape May-Lewes Ferry met the Marine National Bank in the finale. The Ferry dominated game one with good court coverage by Val Driscoll and the dependable serving by Charlie Futcher as they won handily 15-3.

Marine Bank turned the | tables on the Ferry in game two as they took a commanding 11-0 lead behind ■ the excellent serving of Shep Taylor and Janna Miller. The Ferry came ■ roaring back to come to I within one points Marine | at 11-10 behind'good court coverage highlighted by an ■ outstanding dig by Dave I Chapman. However, Marine regained control and went on to win 15-10. The Ferry bounced back I in game three as they again I dominated Marine behind the serving of Charlie Flit- I cher as they won handily 15-6. ! I Tourney Nets $500 For Squad SWAINTON - Second annual Sylvester's Fish Market Golf Tourney held April 25 raised $500 for the Avalon Rescue Squad, according to Steve SylVester.
