STONE HARBOR - The good news : 96th Street will be open to traffic and its sidewalks completed for pedestrian use by Memorial Day. The bad news : It will be a dirt street, with paving expected either the week of May 28 or June 4. according to Edwin F. Pain, borough manager. And the street furniture, "final lighting," landscaping and "other niceties" should be completed by late June, Pain said. He said temporary N lightinig would be installed g at an additional cost of

, around $1,100. j Target date of com- . pleting the half-million- \ dollar revitalization of 'the , central business district had been May 11. Pain said delays were the result of "some design prohlems" and "some workmanship problems we elected to correct." The project is being paid entirely with borough money. « Pain said Harbor Square Shopping Mall, which is being built on the former site of Hahn's Restaurant. 261 96th St., will not be completed until next spring.

Kit Tests Gasoline

UNION — "Are you sure your late model car is running on unleaded gas?" That is the question the American Lung Assocm-' tion of New Jersey — the Christmas Seal People — is asking motorists across the state. In order to assure themselves that they are getting unleaded gasoline when they are paying for it, car owners are invited to contact the American Lung Association of New Jersey to obtain a kit. which provides a simple test to determine if the car has burned leaded gasoline.

REQUESTS FOR the kit may be directed to the Lung Association, 2441 Route 22 West, Union, NJ 07083. Telephone (201) 687-9340. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, there are some service staions across^ he country selling leaded gas for the unleaded variety. In addition to the lead test paper kit, the Lung Association will also send a free brochure outlining the expensive trouble that can result when leaded gas is used instead of unleaded fuel in late model cars.
