Town Aid > Bills Hailed - Bv Chinnici J.

TRENTON - Assemblyman Joseph W. Chinnici, R-Cape May, Cumberland, has praised Assembly action on a bill to « allow two South Jersey towns to apply for special aid to pay for adequate police and fire protection within those communities. Chinnici, who was absent from the Assembly session March 20 because of illness, said he opposes another bill passed by the Assembly, which would require factories and businesses with more than 50 employes to give six months' notice before laying off workers due to a decision to close the business. < A-1221 > "As a businessman, I know how completely unrealistic this bill is. It will not save any jobs and may increase the number of bankruptcies filed by businessmen who just can't make it any more. It is a very bad bill, and I hope Gov. (Thomas H.) Kean vetoes it if it reaches his desk," said Chinnici. SPEAKING ON the aid bill (A-1588), Chinnici said he fully supports the need to provide Millville and Bridgeton the opportunity to apply for additional funds for police and fire protection. The bill would provide each community with up to $65,000. "During the closing days of the last session, we passed a bill to provide emergency assistance to a number of larger towns and cities which needed the money to provide adequate police and fire protection," Chinnici said. "We failed to provide the same opportunity to smaller towns with proven needs. This bill would correct that oversight." Chinnici said he would support a similar bill (S-809), because it provides a more comprehensive solution to the problem of aid to small towns, but could support the bill voted by the Assembly Tuesday, because it addresses many of the same issues.
