A. Don't Burn Retina Looking at Eclipse

TRENTON — Many people consider the Memorial Day weekend the official beginning of the summer fun season. And, as if to celebrate that beginning, the sun and moon will put on a post-holiday show Wednesday May 30, when a partial solar eclipse will be visible in New Jersey. The central path of the moon's shadow will pass

over the United States in a line from near New Orleans, LA, to Assateague Island, south of Ocean City, MD. Beginning approximately 11:20 a.m. May 30, the partial eclipse will appear in the sky over New Jersey until 12:50 p.m. At midpoint, 2:25 p.m. the moon will cover about 93 percent of the sun in this area. VIEWING A solar eclipse is dangerous in the eyes. In a safety message, the New Jefcsey Optometric , Association says the I eclipse should not be viewed directly. There is almost no safe way to view a solar eclipse directly. Sunglasses and smoked glass do not offer sufficient protection, and the use of a double layer of completely overexposed photofilm is not foolproof, the association warns. According to Dr. Errol Rummel, Jackson, NJ., consumer communication chairman of the New Jersey Optometric Association, even though the sun's rays, during a solar eclipse, seem less bright, they are still dangerous. DR. RUMMEL said the eye's retina has no pain receptors and gives no warning when being burnedThe first symptoms of damage may not appear for several hours or days. Binoculars, opera glasses, telescopes and camera lenses concentrate the sun's rays, Dr. Rum- I mel says, making them extremely dangerous for use in viewing an eclipse. The safest way to watch a solar eclipse is to see it on television or in pictures in the newspapers.
