One of the most enjoyable things you can read to your children is poetry. They love the rhyme, the flow, the word play and poetry is written to be read — aloud In the last few years, several poetry books have won nationaf awards, hopefully reviving the presentation of poetry for children The Garden State Book r Award was recently given to Shel Silverstein for A Light in the Attic, a poetry book for children which was on the New York Best Seller List for 20 consecutive weeks in 1981 The winners of the Garden State Book Awards are chosen annually by a panel of children's librarians from the NewJersey Library Association s Chi I dr ens Services Section and the acclaim of children throughout the Garden State. > Since the major criteria for determining the final winners is based on popularity with children, the awards are given to books published three years previously. , This gives the books time to amass a following before the award winners are chosen Shel Silverstein has also published Where the Sidewalk Ends, which since its publication in 1974 has become a perennial favorite w hen the kids can wrestle it a war from their parents His / wonderful drawings add humor and enjoyment to. the books lor all One of my favorites is: INVENTION "I've done it.
