Low- Vision Care Program Extended

SWAINTON - The residents at the Cape May Care Center have benefited from a low-vision cart program recently started at the Center. So such a program will be offered to the ; public. A low-vision program isS run by an optometrist or ophthalmologist specially " trained to cmiduct extra § tests and to Vise special lenses of other aids to im- 1 prove vision. The examina ; tion for a low-vision pro- 3 gram is more costly than a • regular eye exam, but pro • vides a more comprehen sive picture of a patient's eyesight. The optical aids that the low-vision program uses to improve vision may included magnifiers, glasses, telescopes, and non-optical devices such as visors, i filters, reading slits. < stands, lamps, and large I print. \ | r tm iiniiiiiaiiifl if S ins 1* l l

THESE DEVICES j enable many to carry on more activities that are associated with "normal" eye-sight. : This new-found use of vi- • sion provides a better ;• quality of life for the pa i tient as well as providing an opportunity for the patient to view things more I clearly. ■ There are 1.4 million ] visually impaired people in ; this country. Of this 1.4 ■" million, only 500.000 are | considered to be legally \ blind. 80 percnet of this number have some usable vision. It is the population with usable vision that a low-vision program can benefit . Anyone interested in a 1 low-vision clinic, is asked 4 to contact Cape May Care 1 Center a! 465-7633 and ask \ for Ruth Ann Kozlek for further information j
