Getting Ppms Into Perspective w

According to the County Agricultural Agent Larry Newbold, some local residents seem to be canfused about scientific measurements which ap-* pear in local newspapers. Almost every day it seems there is at least one newspaper article dealing with toxic waste, chemicals, etc. and the terms parts per million (ppm), parts per billion (ppb), and parts per trillion (ppt) are usea in these releases. Newbold felt that readers should have some visual image that will help them put these minute quantities into perspective. The following information comes from Dr. Don Cress of Kansas State University to help with analogies of ppm, ppb, and ppt. "PESTICIDE tolerances in food and feeds are expressed in parts per million (ppm). Chemists can measure pesticide residues

in parts per billion (ppb) or even parts per trillion (ppt). The following may be helpful in visualizing these": One ppm equals one minute in 2 years, one inch in 16 miles or one ounce in 32 tons of food; one ppb equals one second in 32 years, one inch in 16,000 miles or about one drop in a 10,000-gallon tank car , one ppt equal one second in 320 centuries, one inch in 16,000,000 miles or about one grain of sugar in an Olympic-size swmming pool. The same holds true for sampling for insects, diseases, etc. in the field or sewage in the stream, Newbold declared. ACCORDING TO Newbold, such minute quantities make it imperative that the sampling be done correctly and that

very sophisticated equipment and highly trained individuals operate this equipment. Newbold said that some of the very sophisticated pieces of equipment are so expensive that even colleges and universities are having difficulty purchasing them. This equipment must also be used in temperature qnd humidity controlled environments to ensure the results are correct. The expense of running just one sample of water for analysis of carcinogens can cost $1,500 plus.
