'News Notes from Middle Township Pat Trego 967-7320 t
Girls' State, a civic organization since 1947, has just named local students eligible to participate in its study program at Rider College. The "state" or girls' State is mythical but was developed to teach young people about their duties to the country we live in. The girls are separated into two groups, the Federalists and the Nationalists. They learn about the duties of local, state and federal government by holding elections of their own. They campaign like any candidates and elect themselves to positions such as town council or governor. Eventually. Girls' State participants from all over
the country are selected to run for election in Washington, where a "President" is named. THE LOCAL girls to be honored at Rider College during the week of June 24 are; .Melody Coles, from Middle Township High School and Middle Township, being sponsored by Unit 198 of Court House American Legion; Kelly Phillips, who lives on Mechanic Street, Court House, and attends Wildwood Catholic High
School, sponsored by Legion Unit 513 in Wildwood The Stone Harbor Unit 331 is the sponsor for Christine Bond, a junior at Middle Township High School; and Doreen Marrone from Middle Township High School, is sponsored by Unit 513 of North Wildwood. The American Legion county chairman. Gladys Pierson. states that permission needed to be granted for outside units to sponsor girls from Middle
Township, but she was proud so many girls from the township were chosen this year. AFTER A WEEK at Rider College, the girls will receive a certificate of graduation from the auxiliary college for all their hard work. To even compete at the "elections" and to be chosen for Girls' State in the first place, the students must have high grades, believe in the teachings of the Bible and show patriotic leadership in their community.
