on the mark by Mark Mattern Velardo's 6 RBIs Pace Wildwood Catholic Win .-'-k. V.
With the baseball season winding down, the Cape May County schools decid ed to pick last week as a time to break put and score a bunch of runs. Wildwood Catholic battered Sacred Heart pitching for 18 hits in a lopsided 18-1 victory. Dave Velardo used a grandslam homer and six RBI to lead the way. Joe Aita clubbed a three-run blast to go along with his five runs batted in. Three other Crusaders collected three hits apiece. Keith Maund and Mark Bakley each had three hits as Middle Township beat up on Pleasantville. 15-2. John Marsden got the 16-htf parade under way in tha first with a Panther grand-\ slam Bob Hicks collected two hits while pitching his first varsity victory. Hicks limited the Greyhounds to just six hits as Middle upped its record to 7 and 11 with the win. Also having good days for the Panthers
were Tim Champion and Tom Leonard, each contributed two hits. LOWER CAPE May went over the .500 mark with a doubleheader sweep of Hammonton. The Capers got a two-out single from Dan Brown in the seventh inning to slip past Hammonton in the first game, 6-5. Brown was also the winning pitcher in the contest, upping his record to 7 and 5. In game two, Jeff Smith banged out four hits* and four RBJ in a 10-0 win. Sean Brennen and Bruce Fronnier belted home runs for the Capers. With the two victories. Lower stood at 12-11 on the season. Wildwood entered the South Jersey Group I baseball playoffs with high hopes of using its highpowered offense to win some ball games. Well, someone forgot to tell Mark Lugo. Lugo struck out 16 batters and collected three
hits himself as Burlington stopped Wildwood 5-0. Lugo ' struck out the side in- the f first and fourth innings for the top-seeded Burlington club. Wildwood managed'' just two hits off Lugo. IT WAS A BATTLE of top pitchers last week in girls softball as Cumberland's Kelli Maloney and Ocean City's Sondra Reeves hooked up. Then the smoke cleared from the fastballs. Cumberland had a hard earned 2-0 victory. Maloney allowed just one hit and Reeves gave up just three. Later in the week. Reeves pitched the Raiders past Toms River South in playoff action, 6-1. Reeves recorded 12 strike outs and Lisa Crompton provided the offensive punch. When it rains it pours. That is what happened in Wildwood when the Warriors and Buena met. In a game marred by rain storms, Buena scored five
i y/imes in the sixth inning to > / pick up a 14-12 win. Walks hurt Wildwood as four of • \ the runs in the pivital sixth i . inning received free ^ passes. Sophomore Michelle i McKeon drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double to highlight a 6-3 win for Lower Cape May over Absegami. Betsey Craig's RBI single preceeded McKeon 's shot. KELLY GALLAGHER knocked in three runs and Abby Williams went three-for-three but it wasn't enough as Wildwood Catholic lost to Sacred Heart 10-6. The game was shortened to six innings by rain with Heart scoring five times in the fifth to secure the margin of victory. Vickie Sorrentino is
undefeated as a pitcher in softball this year and that's no big deal unless you play for Middle Township. The Panthers faced Sorrentino last week and came up empty losing 7-0. Middle was knocked out of Group II play with the loss. ANOTHER TEAM eliminated from playoff action recently was the Ocean City tennis team. The Red Raiders fell to Cinnaminson by a 4-1 count. Tom Koochenbere recorded the lone victory for Ocean City in the third singles. Two other matches went to three sets. In league play, Lower Cape May ran its record to 14 and 3 on the year with a tough 3-2 win over Hammonton. Scott Swain and Mark LoCascio led the way with wins in the top two
i singles matches. Wildwood Catholic dropped a 3-2 match to St. Augustine. After winning i the first two singles coni tests, the Crusaders dropped the next three and the match. Eddie McLain and John Young were the winners for Wildwood Catholic. St. Augustine clinched the Cape Atlantic League II golf title last week with a 186-195 win over Middle Township. Jeff Divico was the low man for the Panthers with a 46. The Hermits finished the season with a perfect 15 and 0 record. Remarks: In a recent conversation with a friend, we were trying to figure out how the Baltimore Orioles or Toronto Blue Jays can catch the Detroit Tigers. „We couldn't think of one besides maybe a few injuries to a few key players. Can you lock up a division race in May? The Phoenix Suns sure helped out the Boston Celtics in the N B A. playoffs. By taking the Lakers to six games, the Suns finally lost to a tired and traveled Los Angeles team. Boston should have an easier time than I first thought.
