Selected All-Star VILLAS - The Cape Express Soccer Club has announced that Silver Streak goal-tender Paul O'Brien has been chosen to play "goalie" on the South Jersey Select Team. Paul is the son of Chuck and Nancy O'Brien of North W^ildwood and is a
sixth grader at Margaret Mace School. He ha£ participated in Rec League Soccer for the past five years, (recently on the Wildwood Fever), and served as goalie for the Silver Streak for the past two years. His goal-tending abilities have enabled his Express Team to remain constantly at the head of its division. TRYOUTS FOR the Select Team were held in Deptford and were limited to players on any Affiliated Soccer Team in South Jersey. Area coaches were requested to send their most promising players, and Coach Dave Federman of Cinnaminson and assistants Wieckowski of Greentree, had to form one team consisting of the 18 top players in South i Jersey. These youngsters will represent South Jersey by playing as far away as: Long Island, N.Y., Fort Dix, Bucks County, Pa., Philadelphia All-Stars and the Delaware County Select Team among others. r
Burke Builders Go Unscathed at 8-0
CAPE MAY — Burke ■Builders remained undefeated and atop -the National League softball standings as they went 2 and 0 during the past week's action. Friday Burke's downed winless Captain Sig's 9 to 4. Chuck Matthews banged out three hits followed by Ed Fuentes, who collected two. On Monday Burke narrowly defeated an upsetminded Bayshore Lounge team 9 to 8 as Ed Bosch had
three hits including the game winner. In other league action: Law's Printing remained in the thick of things as it also won both of its games last week to up its record to 7-1. Law's put it to the Atlas Motor Inn on Friday as it downed Atlas 12 to 1. Law's exploded for nine runs in the second inning to blow the game wide open. Bill Cook and Glenn Reagan led the way with three hits apiece. On Mon-
day Law's defeated the Ugly Mug handily. 9 to 2 Bill Cook and Brendan Rosenberg both collected two, hits including a home run, with Rosenberg's being his seventh, of the season. BAYSHORE LOUNGE, collected its first win of the season as it shut out Eckel's Diesel 3 to 0. Joe McCloskey led the way, going 3 for 3. Bill Heinkel backed up McCloskey as he went 2 for 3.
The Pirate's Den downed Eckel's Diesel 13 to 9 ads four players. Glen Pennycook. Ron Denny. Bill Kennedy and Ken Johnson, collected three hits apiece. Doc's Custard recorded its second win of the season as it blanked Bayshore Lounge 5 to 0. The Atlas Motor Inn blasted Doc's Monday 18 to 6 as Dale Arrowood went 4 for 4 with two triples and four rbi's. Bob Broadwater and Dave Adams chipped in with three hits apiece. New entries are expected this year from Alabama and Michigan. Areas which are hotbeds for young marble players and have participated in the tournmanet in past years include Reading, Pa.; Beckley, W.V.; Dayton. Oh.;
Lumberton, N.C.; Cumberland, Md.. Yonkers NY.; Baltimore, Md., and Alexandria, Va. THE NATIONAL Marbles Tournament began in 1922 when Macy's Stores in Philadelphia sponsored a promotion tournament. In 1923, the Scripps-Howard picked up the sponsorship and continued it for many years. The tournament has been held through the 60 years in various cities along the eastern seaboard including Asbury Park, Atlantic City, and Wildwood. Marble champions, selected for elimination
contests in cities and counties throughout the coun try, spend a weeek of serious competition at the tournament site. The national boy and girl champions each receive a college scholarship, trophies, plaques, and an all-expense-paid trip to next year's tournament. Last year's nation champions will return this year as guests of the tournament. 0 Closure Put On Crabbing TRENTON - Effective today, three waterways in SCape May County have been closed to commercial crabbing by the state Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife. They are West Creek, Bidwell Creek and the Cape May Canal. The closure is to preserve sufficient crabs for recreational crabbers. •The closure does not bar the use of continually tended collapsible crab traps, hand lines, dip nets, or rod and reel.
