TRENTON -The Senate passed legislation yesterday, sponsored by Senator James R. Hurley, R-Cape May, Cumberland, commissioning a study of sales tax revenues in Cape May County to determine the impact of tourism on the state's economy. "We all know that
tourism is the fastest growing industry in the senate. However, there are no precise figures available on just how much tourism pumps into the state's economy," Hurley said. "This study will, for the first time, give us an accurate indication of the importance of tourism to the economic vitality of New Jersey. Cape May was selected for the pilot project because tourism is the only major industry there." The bill appropriates $50,000 for the Division of Tourism to conduct an
analysis of the sales tax revenues of each municipality in Cape May County for one year. The division will submit a report to the legislature 8 detailing the results of the study by March 1. 1985. Senator Hurley continued. "Hopefully, the results of this study will convince some hesitant legislators that we should expand our efforts to4ell New Jersey as a vacationland by showing them that every dollar spent on promotion pays off many times over in additional revenues."
