: Diet Do's 5 No Magic System For Weight Loss

Bv RUTH ALCORN WANBERG One thing I will continue to stress in this column is that there is no one method of taking off weight. So, the I very next thing you must ■ do after you make the BIG ■ DECISION is to choose a diet plan that suits your life style It is when people choose a diet foreign to their normal eating habits that they find they can't stay with it. Even worse, they become frustrated and give up their resolve to lose weight. But, there's one thing you'll learn, you can't prolong the pleasures in life any more than you can hur-

ry along the sorrows, and prolonging the pleasure of overindulgence in food can only lead to the disease of obesity ONE THING I'm sure of — I know from experience some of the methods that will not work: starvation ("fasting" is a nicer word); medication — pills which either made me so hyper I couldn't relax or so obnoxious my family couldn't stand me; and paying just about any authority" who promised me a weight loss miracle: Use this, or that and lose 40 pounds a month!" None of these methods did anything for me After

1 much searching, I finally f found a technique that does ! work for me. I still have a f way to go, but I know I will reach my goal and, even better, I'll stay there, because I have changed my eating habits In an effort to list as i , many methods of dieting as currently reflected in print, I recently filled both sides i of a legal-size sheet of i paper. There's a successful technique available for I each one of us. And each one. from Accupuncture to ! Yoga, has some merit, but theory doesn't necessarily result in reality and many of the methods of weight loss can be easily dismissed. Some because they are elitist in nature and others are so bizarre they must be ignored It is my purpose in writing this column to discuss enough of these methods so that a comfortable plan will be found for each one of you. It must become rather comfortable for it is to be a lifelong addition to your life style if you are to avoid

chronic weight fluctuations. ONE AFTERNOON recently, a local realtor took our family through a house for sale. He was a tall, slim, healthy-looking man. My small son was carrying a bag of jelly beans he had just purchased and he asked the agent if he would like to have one. The kind reply was, "No, thank you. I do not eat between meals." How definite and how delightful! Who could pressure someone to "try just one," with a statement so final? His answer deserved respect and many could benefit by adopting his method. N So, please write and tell me of your problems and frustrations in trying to select a diet plan. Perhaps I. having been there, may be able to help you get started with a plan that fits into your way of life. Write to Ruth Alcorn Wanberg c/o the Cape May County Herald, Box 43 0.
