Winners Revealed In MADD Contest

AVALON - Winners in its second annual art and essay contest have been announced by the CapeAtlantic Chapter, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) Theme for the contest was "What I can do in my home, school, and community to reduce the drank driving statistics". ESSAY WINNERS were : Junior High Division — * first, Chris Mazzitelli, Atlantic Christian School; second. Christin Dodd. Avalon Elementary School; third, Julie Sturgeon, Atlantic Christian School. High School Division — first, Stephanie Hicks, Atlantic Christian School; second, Lynne Mazzitelli, Atlantic Christian School; third, Ann Marie McCarthy, Wildwood Catholic High School. OCEAN CITY - Vice Adm Wayne E. Caldwell, Coast Guard Atlantic Area Commander, will award the gold lifesaving medal to: Edward Czwartacki Jr. of Mt. Laurel, (posthumous); Keith

Davies of Bryn Mawr, Pa. (posthumous); and Patrolman Michael T. Mulroy of Ocean View. The award will be presented at City Hall here 11 a.m. Monday, June 11. The three men rescued two Amish women from drowning off Ocean City May 26, 1963. Czwartacki gave his life in the attempt Davies was killed in a motorcycle accident two weeks later. Their parents will be present to accept the award on their behalf The gold lifesaving medal is the highest award that a civilian can receive for heroism in rescue at sea The award is authorized by act of Congress and 615 gold lifesaving medals have been awarded since it was established in 1874 Since 1960, only 78 gold lifesaving medals have been awarded
