Guarding Against Heat's Dangers
By CHRISTINE HAYCOCK. M.D. Ah, summer a season of swimming, picknicking, ball playing and heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion? If you're not careful As the temperature soars during the dog days of sum mertime. the greater your chances of being victimized by heat exhaustion or. even worse, heat stroke For the higher the tempeiature and humidity climb — particularly over a number of days - the harder time the body has in cooling itself down Paradoxically, the body produces heat, but during blistering heat waves, it must emit the heat if it is to function properly And. although this heat loss is manifested by perspiration. sometimes those beads of sweat on your forehead just aren't enough to prevent a serious heatrelated injury IF THE BRAIN S heat center loses control, it is possible to have body temperatures of 105, 107 or even 110 degrees' Fahrenheit during a hot, muggy spell Sweating stops and the skin is hot but dry If this is the case, some things have to be done to protect the life of the sufferer Such an unchecked condition can lead to heat stroke, which can cause the victim to experience convulsions, coma, stroke or even death. During such symptoms, the body's circulation speeds up — generating even more heat — and the result can be damage to blood vessels, blood clots, liver deterioration, and kidney failure. But these signs need not appear if proper precautions are taken. At the first sign of weakness, confusion or lethargy, get the person out of the sun Ideally, the victim should rest inside an air-conditioned room. In the event of a power failure (which often occurs during long hot and humid spells), fanning by hand will help
If possible, drape the person with wet towels or place him or her in a tub filled with ice water Per mit a heat victim who is nauseated to drink cool water. IF YOU HAVE any doubts about the person's condition and if it seems to be worsening, contact a physician, especially if the victim is a child Children, with their high activity . levels, can be prone to this problem Again, such severe symptoms — as well as initial weakness — can be headed off if you wear loose clothing, take adequate fluids before and during ex ercise. stay out of the sun and if very warm and ( humid, cut back on exer- J rise This way you'll keep ^ your body temperature J down Moreover, don't eat too i much (chances are the heat will take away your appetite, anyway > so the body doesn't have to work harder to digest the food, which increases temperature, but do drink plenty of fluids Exercise should best be done early in the morning or late after noon to minimize exposure to heat. CONTRARY TO popular opinion, the old gin-and-tonic (or any alcoholic beverage for that matter), despite its initial cooling ef feet, will not cool you down Alcohol only produces more body heat. For those who work in the fields, are involved with athletics, are elderly or suffer from vascular problems, it is imperative that you take heed of the heat and its potential harmful effects. But if you follow the precautions mentioned above, chances are you will have a long, enjoyable summer, the heat and humidity notwithstanding. Dr. Haycock is associate professor of surgery at the New Jersey Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
