Sounds i BY CHARLES P. LAMEY Oizy "Hboarne's latest. Bark At The Moon (CBS). will certainly please his following — as he doesn't break from his set heavy metal formula for success However, as with his previous records this one consists of dull, uninspired material, terrible singing, and lackluster playing Every once in a while some flashy guitar solo saves the day. but generally speak tng Bark At The Moon isn't very good Icicle Works' debut album has been highly touted ia some critical circles for its blend of new wave and psychedelia, and for the mast part their first record ( on Arista i shows a / great deal of potential Unfortunatley. this effort lacks the uniqueness or conviction of other new psychedelic bands such as 3 O'Clock, The Rain Parade, or Dream Syn- L dicate They've got a few good tracks, but not enough to sustain interest Icicle Works hove potential, but only time will tell if they can really deliver the goods ONE OF THE funniest films of the year has been the heavy metal satire. This Is Spinal Tap The humor of their material also works on their album sound track ( Polydor These numbers are the perfect pardody of the worst in heavy metal, and one should get a few chuckles each time This Is Spinal Tap hits the turntable Better Ye! will be when the film is out on video tape Fans of R4B vocal groups should check out Various Artists Atlantic Records History of Rhythm and Blues Vocal Groups This is a wonderful collection of soulful goodies, snch as The Chords' "Sh Boom. The Clovers' 'Devil Or Angel', The Robins "Smokey Joe's Cafe", and The Drifters, "Ruby Baby" There's not a bum track on this record and if enough people buy it we can expect more exciting volumes Put it on late at night and remember the long lost ■ days of when radio really I had personality and the I tunes weren't just part of I the background but actual- I ly a major part of your life I In the mood for a good I book" Then pick up Ed I Ward's Michael Bloomfield I The Rise and Fall of An I r American Guitar Hero I j (Cherry Lane Books) In I his relatively short life, I Bloomfield became a I guitar legend by being one I of the most successful ( ar- I tistically more than commercially) white blues performers He played with the greats of the genre and recorded landmark albums with Paul Butterfleld and The Electric Flag Unfortunately, he also led a torturous lifestyle which always seemed to keep him from breaking into supers tardom But, personal problems aside, this book makes one thing perfectly clear and that is Michael Bloomfield was a true talent who is sorely missed. Maybe he isn't a household name, but he was a pioneer yho turned a k>t of middleclass kids onto the blues. Ed Ward should be commended
