Art Exhibit Winners Revealed i

COURT HOUSE - The art gallery effect in the Cttinty Library was very apparent to the painters and sketchers who participated in the 10th Annual Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition there May 31. The vast shelves of books receded into the background as the senior citizen artists began set- i ting up the displays of their paintings across the main floor of the library, with the assistance of Kathleen Duffy of the library staff. She ] had set aside additional exhibit space on a lower floor I for artists who would be ar- 1 riving later in the morning. All of the displays were in s place for the scheduled 1 opening at 10 o'clock. 1 THE OLDER artists, < whose ages ranged from 65 to 82, hailed from every < corner of Cape May Coun- ( ty. In recognition of their I early morning effort, as < well as, their talent, they 1 were feted to a breakfast snack of coffee and Danish 1

pastries, in a downstairs room, with Rosalie Timmins of the Office on Aging serving as hostess. With the early arrival of the judges, who, this year were Barbara Knipple of Erma and Kathy Orbanes of Goshen, the juried art contest was underway, at 1 p.m. It was a tense, waitful hour until the judges handed their decisions to Contest Coordinator Bobbie Brown and the blue, red, yellow and white ribbons were placed on the winning pictures. Anton Miller of . Cape May; 3rd, "Rough Sea" (oil) by Edwin Hewitt of Wildwood Crest; Mention, first, "September" (oil) by Kohler of Court

House; Honorable Mention, second, "Winter Barn" (oil) by W B. Comet of Ocean City. In the non-professional category — 1st, "Gramma's Blue Plate" (oil) by John Walter of Avalon Manor, 2nd, "The Card Game" (water color) by June Spielman of Avalon; 3rd, "Swamp Rose * Mallow" (oil) by Dorothy M. Henry of Court House; j Honorable Mention, first, "Old Mexico" (oil) by Mary R. Henkel of Sea isle City; Honorable Mention second, "Crusty Old Ship, Wildwood" by Louis E. Ulrich of Wildwood. THE FIRST, second and third place winners in each division will be eligible to enter the 1984. New Jersey Senior Citizens Juried Art Contest and Exhibition at Edison State Collage, Trenton, August 3-26. The awards in the state contest will be a Grand Prize ($250 bond), Second Prize ($100 bond), Third Prize ($50 bond). First and Second Honorable Mentions in the professional and nonprofessional categories. The exhibition in Trenton A: will feature entries from ™ contests which were held in ^ 21 counties throughout the I state. The event is spon- % sored by the New Jersey Division on Aging, Depart- ( ment of Community Af- i fairs. In conjunction with * - the art exhibit, there will " be a reception to honor all of the county artists, Thursday. Aug. 2, at | Edison College. ^ The Cape May County Office on Aging, which spon- " sors the local contest each year, will be transporting the winning paintings to the Edison College location in 1 I late July.
