Video Eye Renting Movies for Home TV
With the home video revolution making it possible to rent or buy thousands of feature films, Video Eye will attempt to review the well known ones as well as the more obscure. Everyone is aware of pictures such as Tootsie or I Close Encounter* — but how about things like Beastmaster.Get Crazy, or Valley Girl? Hopefully, this column will remind you of a film in your past as well a as inspire you to check out r something that's collecting U dust at your local video 5 shop. Whatever you do, jj don't pass by this ■technological I breakthrough Rent a tape I today! ■ CON AN, THE BAR BARIAN (MCA): If someone was born for a role, it was bodybuilder turned actor Arnond Schwarzenegger, who was perfect for the musclebound Conart This is a wonderful screen version of the late Robert E. Howard's fictional hero, and it's by far, the most entertaining of the many sword and sorcery films around. Conan is a simple
man, who is capable of revenge ( to the point of being sadistic), yet able to show love and compassion. Besides Schwarzenegger, Conan. The Barbarian is fortunate to co-star the talented dancer Sandahl Bergman (unfortunately killed off, so she won't be in the sequel) and former surfer Gerry Lopez, Script and direction by John Milium are both commendable. Hopefully, the follow-up which is due to this summer will be as strong. THE HILLS HAVE EYES (Vestron). Here's a genuinely spooky film. A family is moving to California. Their station wagon breaks down in the middle of the desert and they encounter thirtJlzahre family — who just happdn to be, amongst other things-^— cannibals. There's tension, scares, and" even a few \ laughs, here, making it one / of the more durable films-' of the genre. Director W#s Cravan probably got mofe attention for Last House On The Left, but this is really a » much stronger effort. ^ ... DYNAMITE CHICKEN (Monterey). This comedy is a collage of late 60's alternative - culture
philosophies and it's a jumbled mess. The selling points are early Richard Pryor. which are uneven, and The Ace Trucking Company, which is saved thanks to a young, and fynny , Fred Willard. Dynamite Chicken has moments; there just aren't many of them.
