A J's, Mug Make Volleyball Finals
CAPE MAY — In the first match to determine the initial champion of the 1984 City Coed Power Volleyball League A & J's Seafood took on the Potter with the winner advancing to the finals. The first game was a seesaw battle as neither team could establish an advantage in the early going. With the score 12-10 Potter, A & J's Patty MacClane sparked a comeback with her perfect sets to Bob
Jackson and Bill Abadie and Scott Hitler controlled the net early with excellent spikes as the Potter took a 9-4 lead. Rick Ferrante's sets to MacClane and Jackson rallied A & J's to an 11-11 tie. Joe Halasz' nice defense and Donna Juliani's hustle sealed the 15-11 win for the Potter. Jan MacKenzie's beautiful sets to Rick Ferrante and Tom Swenk paced A & J's to the early 6-2
lead in game three. A & J's continued to dominate play behind Carolyn Murphy's serving as her team took an easy victory 15-4. In game four the Potter had to fight back the entire game to avoid elimination after falling behind 9-4 in the early going. The Potter could manage only nine points for the contest, however, as the total team effort put in by A & J's proved to be too much and A k J's took the game 15-9 to move on to the championship round. The Ugly Mug met S.A. Burge Associates in the other pairing of the semifinal round. The Mug got to rolling early in game one as the play of John Wilsey and Mike Bonner gave it the early 8 to 1 advantage. Some well-placed spikes by Ted Ferrante rallied Burge
slightly, but Barb Bakely's bumps to setter Loraine Holt and her Subsequent sets to spiker Mike Bonner proved too much for Burge as the Mug won handily 15-3. The second game was much closer as neither team took more than a twopoint advantage throughout the game. Jerry Miller and Doreen Drexel were the sparks for Burge as John Wilsey and Jan Kellaway played well for Burge The Mug prevailed in the end, however, 16-14 behind the well placed sets of Doreen Drexel to Jerry Miller and the diving saves of Cheryl Giddis as it won with room to spare 15-10. The Mug sewed things up in game four as it used a total team effort to down Burge 15-7.
Title Taken By Builders
CAPE MAY - Underdog Buck's Electroliers took on regular season champion J.T. Builders in the championship match of the 1984 City Coed Recreational Volleyball League. In the first game Buck's took an 11-7 lead behind the steady serves of Pete
Kakoyannis. However, the well placed serves of Mark Pratteucci and the nice bumps of Tami Thomas gave J.T.'s the spark it needed to win game one 15-12. Buck's took the early lead in game two and then held off J.T.'s for the remainder of the contest to secure a 15-12 victory. Eigh consecutive points on serve by Tom Jackson opened game three as Buck's took the 8-0 lead. J.T.'s Rick Simpson did him one better, however, as he reeled off nine perfect serves to give his team a 9-8 lead. Excellent spikes by J.T.'s Mark Rucci proved to be the difference from that point on as J.T.'s won 15-10. J.T.'s turned the tables in game four as it took an 8-0 lead. Kakoyannis brought Buck's right back with 8 well placed serves. J.T.'s then completely shut down Buck's offense behind the excellent blocks and spikes by John Thomas as J.T.'s won the game and the championship 15-9.
