I Avalon Group f Survives Seas

By JOE ZELNIK AVALON — One torpedo last Saturday night and the | hard and hearty core of this borough's business community would have oeen wiped out. But no attack came and, except for sore right arms from waving at unfortunates on shore, the Chamber of Commerce survived its backbay cruise on the "Miss Avalon." Sixty persons took the cruise which included hors d'oeuvres and drinks culminated by a huge cake for two women who shared the June 2 birthday, Joan Neil and Janice Linfoot, owner of the Island Cafe. THE AFFAIR was choreographed by Miriam Kauterman of Avalon Real Estate and included singing of songs such as the prophetic "You Are My Sunshine.'' The day had been overcast, but the sun appeared almost precisely at the 6 p.m. launchtime. Equally miraculous, j gnats held off their attack until just as the boat docked, at about 8:30. Among the highlights were a number of "fishing"

awards and door prizes presented by Becky Greenberg at "the pointy end of the boat " ^ THE CRUISE was donated by Capt Hurd and the hors d'oeuvres given by Donnelly's Deli, Domestics Unlimited, the Golden Marlin Cafe, the Island Cafe and Sylvester's Fish Market Thus it was possible for the chamber to net about $350. After the cruise, many of the landlubbers moved on to a perfect sunset at the Avalon Yacht club, nonmembers being guests of members. No editor would permit a story to end with the cliche, a "great time was had by all."
