Taking the Delta Lady: . ' 4 / ) Riverboat or Schooner?
By JOE ZELNIK C A P E M A Y - WILDWOOD - So, whadayawanado, take a ride on the Delta Lady? Or take a ride on the Delta Lady? That's right; there are two. Berthed in the Wildwood Yacht Basin on West Rio Grande Avenue is a red, white and blue. 78-foot paddle wheel replica of a Mississippi riverboat. Berthed at the Miss Chris Fishing Center off Route 109 in Cape May is a 65-foot replica of a three-masted Chesapeake Bay oyster ^ schooner with pink sails. BOT1I CARRY passengers, have threemember crews, and similar departure times. If that isn't confusing enough, each has a phone number ending with the same four numbers, 1919. But the riverboat has the Wildwood 522 prefix, the schooner the Cape May 884 There the resemblances apparently end. The riverboat carries 150 passengers and is charging $4.95 ( and $3.30 tor children) for a two-hour trip. The schooner carries 18 passengers and charges $20 a person for a three-hour trip, $50 for a six-hour cruise, and $75 for all day. THE $400,000 RIVERBOAT has a full bar plus snacks, leaves port at 10:30 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m., plus a moonlight cruise at 10, and V travels in the intercoastal 1 waterway to Cape May ( harbor. It also has a J "Southern belle," Sally
Rowan of North Wildwood, taking tickets, and Gerry Lynch of Villas playing the banjo on the moonlight cruise. The "close to $100,000" schooner provides snacks, allows customers to bring aboard lunches and alcoholic beverages "with moderation," leaves at 10 a.m., and 2 and 7 p.m.. and sails the ocean two-three miles offshore around Cape May Point. The names? The schooner, 12-years-old, had it first, being named for its home port of Deltaville, Va., but it had been berthed in Long Island and was brought to' the county in April. The riverboat is brand new. launched at Harker's Island. N.C., March 31 and brought to the county in April. But its corporation was formed and the name picked last August. Ironically, the owners originally intended to call it the "Dixie Belle," but "somebody else had that already." CAPT. BILL HENFEY is the riverboat taptain; Capt. Dave Franchetta is the schooner's skipper. Each was surprised to learn of theLOther's ship. "I was in New York" said Franchetta, "when my wife called me and said, "Guess what, there's another Delta Lady in Cape May.' It upset me at first." "I'm not too happy about it," said Henfey. "But it's just one of those things. He ran out of New York for years. He came to my boat and I talked to the
gentleman. We'll try to work together. It's an unfortunate situation, but there are no hard feelings." "THESE ARE two entirely different things," said Franchetta. "I talked to him and we worked it out. He's calling his the Riverboat Delta Lady and I'm calling mine the Schooner Delta Lady " "It should be hard for people to confuse us." said* Henfey. "I'm just concerned if someone calls him and thinks he's got me and gets quoted the wrong price." The Marine Inspection Office of the U.S. Coast ' Guard in Philadelphia said two ships with the same name are no problem "You can have 37 boats with the same name." said Lt. Cmdr. Harry Foote who said both ships have passed inspection. He personally inspected ^he schooner Graduates Of Cabrini RADNOR, PA. - Two Cape May County students were among the gradutes at the recent 24th annual Cabrini College com mencement hefe.
