Although JermJine -Jatftson has had his hits, he's still been forced to live in the shadow of his megastar brother Michael. This new album ( on Arista ) won't change that, but it should make more people aware of this versatile talent. Jermaine is a confidents singer, who often leaves the safety of his established soul sound to try soft rock and pure pop. Not everything works, but it's to his credit that Jermaine Jackson isn't afraid to try something different. There are plenty of hot numbers here and Jermaine will probably score a few hits off this record. Oddly enough, his duet with Michael, "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin' and the one Jacksons number.

Escape From The Planet Of The Ant Men." are two of the weaker tunes on this album PINK FLOYD fans will be pleased with About Face (Columbia) by former Floyd guitarist David Gilmmir. This is a strong outing— much more impressive than Gilmour's first solo effort— with memorable songs, strong musical performances, rich production, and an assured bandleader. Some might be let down by the fact Gilmour doesn't take many chances here, but, all in all. About Face promises a strong solo career. Sleep It Off (Ze/Mercury> is the second album by Christina and, like her debut it never really catches fire. The main problem with Sleep It Off is its lack of consistency. On the

uptempo, more rock soun- - ding pop numbers, she 1 displays a cute, enticing < voice. But, too often, the material is dire and the * performances and produc- j tion insipid. There certain- . ly aren't enough bright t moments to make this jj worth hearing. f Let's Active's mini- t album, afoot (I.R.S.), is a / very impressive debut. Led i by noted producer Mitch ' Easter, this pop band- has t plenty of 60 influences, yet ' the sound is pure 80 as far ' ; as mood, texture, and tone < are concerned. Let 's Active » have the knack for coming j up with gripping tunes that • nicely fit their spirited / voices. Let's Active are a j band to keep an eye on i \ 9 '
