2nd City Triathlon Scheduled Sunday
CAPE MAY — The city. Le Coq Sportlif and Arena are co-sponsors of the 2nd Annual Cape May Triathlon slated for Sunday. Three superate events make up this test of endurance — a one-mile ocean swim, a 50-mile bicycle race and a 20-kilometer run ( 12.4 miles) Last year's winner. 20-year-old Ken Glah of West Chester. Pa . is rturning to compete but as a member of the SBR team The field of triathletes has more than doubled for the 1984 race, expanding from 78 to over 200. Some changes made to improve this event include the creation of new catagories for women's teams, men's teams and mixed pairs ALSO, additional awards will be presented to the top female in each event, the last finisher, the top lifeguard and special prizes donated by the Lobster House, McGlade's
Restaurant and the Cape i May County Council on I Physical Fitness Many of the competitors are doctors, lawyers and business executives and i take this relatively newsport very seriously, training as much as three hours per day Of local interest, a team sponsored by le Coq Spbrtif will be composed of a contingent of Cape May County lifeguards — Bill Ring and Mike Regan from North Wildwood and Bob Pugh and Bill Mazurek of Ocean City. Other teams registered are Ken Glah's SBR team and the Lauck family team made up of mom, dad, and two sons. Unlike most triathlons that run continuously, requiring competitors to go immediately from one event to the next with only time to change gears, the Cape May race is a stage* race. Each event is run separately with a one-hour break between each leg. THIS FORMAT allows triathletes to change and recuperate, enhances spectator participation and enables the organizers to tabulate the results and prepare for the next race Contestants are scored according to how they place in each event and scores from the three events are totaled to determine the place winners. The low gross method is used whereby a competitor's score in each event is literally his or her order of finish. For example, first place receives one point and 50th place receives 50 points. The triathlete with lowgross point total after the three races are completed is the winner In 1983. Ken Glah finished first *n bike race, first in the . .. and seventh in thi swim for a winning low total of nine points. "he Triathlon will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and most of the activity will be centered on Boardwalk and Convention Hall, which will s? r v e as race headquarters.
