In 1939 the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was created by Act of Congress to assist the Coast Guard in promoting safety on the water. Still the only boating organization in the country so authorized, the auxiliary today has more than 1.300 flotillas throughout all 50 states. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands. American Samoa, and Guam and a membership exceeding 42,000 men and women > THE AUXILIARY is a ; volunteer, non-military < organization which retains j a close affiliation with the J Coast Guard yet remains/ , strictly civil in nature. Any U.S. citizen 17 years of age or older is eligible to join the auxiliary'. Although the auxiliary participates in various activities, the three basic programs of the auxiliary are public education, courtesy

marine examinations, and operational missions. One of the great services of the organization is its public education program. Boaters have a choice of auxiliary courses, each designed to meet the needs of a particular segment of the boating population.
