outdoors with Lou Rodia Blues Still Main Target for Anglers
. Given a choice for consistent fishing right now. odds are that three kinds of fish * would emerge as contenders. Bluefish. fluke and sea bass all have been providing the most action on a regular basis. Weakfish have played tag all season with the bay fishermen. Black drum also disappointed anglers. Weather was a key. It is now midJune. A lot is happening which will lead to even irtore change. v^hark fishing has started. The first exploratory trips for makos are being recorded. Cold
water may have slowed up the arrival of the makos. But the warm weather of recent days should up the water temperature and makos should be on hand for the $10,000 South Jersey Marina Mako tournament June 14 through 17 m It's a big season's kickoff tournament and some of the best sharkers in the area will be vying for the money. Sharking is the fastest growing sport in salt water today. BLUEFISH ARE still the most important fish for sports anglers along the coast. Many anglers are
jaded when it comes to bluefish. They- rate them so-so compared to exotic game fish and a notch or two below weakfish and striped bass. Eating qualities are downplayed, mostly because bluefish are not cared for properly when they are caught. Like them, love them or hate them, bluefish are still the bread-and-butter fish for small boaters, charter and party boat fishermen and for surf, jetty and pier fishermen. Countless youngsters cut their eye teeth learning to fish by chasing snappers on a float and bamboo pole in the back waters from a local dock. 1 Troll for them, cast to breaking bluefish. chum for them, fish them with bait or lures and with fly rods or boat rods. Fish them day or fish them night, and it is still the bluefish which ranks No. 1 in popularity along the East Coast. An estimated 28 million bluefish were caught last year. IF YOU LIKE to catch fish and can keep from having a nose-in-the-air attitude about bluefish they can be a great sport. Unfortunately. some anglers have missed the real fun attached to bluefish. Tackle i is sometimes over-gunned, i Use of planers and handlines is effective as a way to produce numbers, but is less than sporting Wire line is a notch bet ter. Trolling rods can be scaled down from 50 and 60-pound outfits to 20 and 30-pound outfits and they can be effective in whipping big blues if the drags are set properly and the angler learns to handle these fighting fish Once the bluefish fisherman gets past the need for producing the BIG numbers, he can have a lot more fun with fewer fish by scaling down his equipment and fishing blues differently. One improvement is the use of down-riggers. Pioneered in the Great Lakes for deep trolling for salmon and lake trout, these deep-trollers allow the angler to get his lure down where the fish are and still fish them with •everything from a spinning rod to a one-handed bail casting reel. AH it takes is to get off away from the fleet, find your own pod of blues and stop or slow down the boat after you hook up on a fish. DON'T TRY it in the middle of the fleet, however It won't work Another topnotch way to fish for blues I is t# troll until you locate a 1 pod of fish on your fish- I finder or until you catch I one trolling. Then, stop the fj boat and jig for blues or bucktail them with spinn- | Free Licenses f RIO GRANDE - The jf county Office on Aging has | reminded the more mature jj sportsmen and women of 1 the county that free clam • 1 and oyster applications and ijj free fishing license applica- 3 tions are available at the 1 Social Services Building. fj Oystering and clamming '4 permits are open to those 62 or older, and free fishing $ licenses for those 70 ot I over •
i ing g#ar Blues will hit a big i pile if lures. Thw can often be found on th&surface and nothing I is montexciting than to ; have<3wg oluefjsh slam a surface popping plug as you retrieve if back to the boat. Some of my charter boat captain friends would probably like to boil me in oil for some of the above comments, since they stem compelled to bring big numbers back to the dock by fnany of their charter , parties. Meat fishermen often set the level for how a charter captain has to fish if he is to get and keep some charters. BUT. THOSE fishermen who are not meat fishermen can specify to the charter captain how they want to fish and if you charter and want to fish light tackle, there is no way but what the skipper will accommodate you. Unless, of course, he wants to lose you as a customer. We have chartered from New England to Florida, and for the most part, charter captains make the effort to accommodate you and provide you with the kind of fishing you wanfflf they can't or won't, they'll usually tell you and they may even help you find another skipper who is temperamentally geared and properly equipped to provide you the kind of fishing you want Same applies to party boats. Find out what the captain plans to do before you board the boat Don't hesitate to ask It's your money and you have a right to spend it where you are going to get what you want REPORTS: Sea Isle City's Bob Mullen decked a 13-lb. blackfish on a recent four-hour outing on the Royal Flush The Mullen family combined to bag 20 big blackfish. Six-year-old Eric Jankowski of Strathmere outfished his dad and Lee Siegel of Woodbine on a recent trip out of Frank's Boat Livery when he decked two twopound fluke They were fishing between the Corson's Inlet Bridge and the Inlet with minnows. Fluke catches have been good there .Fred Frankenfield of Cape May was one of three anglers aboard the Porgy If ! who picked up three big Weakies each on a recent trip up the bay with Capt Frank Thompson. The pool went to Herb Brown of North Cape May with his 1 1 3/4-Ib. blue.
Wildwood III Skipper Ed Olsen has been turned in some good party boat fluke catches in Delaware Bay He has had good action < 150 keeper fluke ) on one trip to the Horseshoe in the bay. Another good day was recorded at 60-ft. sloug. Five-year-old Brian Gubernick of Sea Isle City boated a 2 1/2-lb. sea bass on an ocean trip on the Challenger with Capt. Ed Egnor out of Ocean City. Al Millman of S. Seaville. weighed in a 3 1/2 lb. pickerel he caught on an outing to East Creek in Belleplain State Forest, according to Frank Yitiello. at Vitiello's Dock in Sea Isle City. GNATS AND MOSQUITOES: If you are being harrassed by gnats and mosquitoes, there are a number of "sure-fire',' po- * tions around. Some work Some do not. One of the best we have found so far is an Avon product called Skin So Soft. It is a bath oil whjph works as well as a repellent and at the same time, it helps condition the skin.
While the product was not designed as a bug chaser, it has som^tning in it which does tmNjgb with^ whole lot bettersjlTptfour local source is AvonYady Pat Riggitano of Cape May. Monitoring devices have been planted in the bay from time to time and may be in place for as much as 15 days to a year. The devices are moored and marked on the surface by a buoy with a flashing white light and verticle yellow arvf red stripes. To be sure th<*information is accurate for future use in tidal current charts it is necessary that these buoys remain in place and undistrubed Boatefs are asked to stay \clear of the temporary buoys. Information on the buoys is found on a poster being distributed by the Delaware Valley Power Squadron.
