V fOWNSHIP COUNCIL wilJ be hiring five police patrolmen as one of the new government's first official acts after it takes office July 1, according to Deputy Mayor Robert . Fothergill who was elected ) last month as mayor on the council. Hiring the five patrolmen was one of the terms of the township's new two-year contract with union, members of the local force, he said. Nine candidates for the $14,000-a-year jobs had . been interviewed by Monday. Fothergill confirmed. He added, however, that he's "going to rely on the new council" to decide if a captain's vacancy on the force should be filled. FOUR MONTHS AGO. the township ordered three $9,077 police patrol cars from an upstate dealer on a state cooperative purchase agreement. If these 1984 vehicles don't arrive this week. Fothergill said Monday night, he'll ask township officials to consider canceling the order. The cars are now a Jialf-year old. he reasons, so police might be better off with 1985 models.
