We. as a nation, have developed poor eating habits. Studies indicate that 25 percent of our population is considered to be obese (at least 20 percent over the desired norm > . How did we do this to ourselves? Probably because eating is pleasurable and food is available. But by constantly being satiated, we foul up our body's precise functions and we experience diunger pangs when there is no real hunger. Obesity is not a conscious choice we make. Rather, it is a teacherously progressive disease. We gain ( or lose i a pound at a time. Some people are able to seek help when their scales register a small gain Some do not. THE REASONS for this difference do not matter. It is to the latter group that I address this column. They need much encouragement, love and understanding to help them take off those extra pounds. Dear Ruth: I'm too heavy because I eat too much. It's as simple as that! But it isn't easy for me to lose weight because I have a heart problem so regular exercises are out. I am supposed to exercise by walking but that doesn't do much for my weight. I would like some help Could be Happier Dear C.B.H : First of all, you admit that you eat more than you need and that you are overweight. And second, you want to do something aboul it. These admissions are a big plus for you. Your heart condition poses a hurdle but it is also an important reason why you must do something about your weight I'm sure your doctor has recommended a diet, as well as exercise Follow his advice, but use some imagination in your meal planning. A book on that subject from your local library will give you lots of ideas Varying the foods within your diet plan will prevent boredom, a diet pitfall.

Next, add one extra minute to your exercise routine each day (walking) . With your doctor's approval, join the S.W.I. M. Program, established in Wildwood Crest. Transportation is cheerfully provided and you'll feel great afterwards. If there's a service organization over your way, join it. Get over that feeling of helplessness, you really are not limited in what you can do. Excuses lead to isolation, which compounds the problems. Try to get outdoors as much as possible. If you don't already have one, why not plant a small garden'' That is wonderful therapy. Invite a friend for tea. These are merely suggestions, but remember that what you choose to do must be done on a routine basis, because an occasional lift to the spirit is nice, but not as helpful as a regular commitment of friendship and love.
