Ticks May Carry Serious Diseases
COURT HOUSE - The tick season is upon us and residents of .Cape May County are reminded by Andrew W. Melchiorre. of the county Health Department. to be careful in grassy and wooded areas where ticks most frequently reside
Pet owners should be aware that their dogs and cats often bring ticks into the house and deposit them in rugs and on furnishings. There are two reportable tick-borne diseases which occur in New Jersey: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever must be recognized and treated early to prevent fatalities. The fever is transmitted by the bite of infectious ticks. Several tick species can transmit the disease, the most common in our area being the American Dog tick. Dermacenter variabilis. THE INCUBATION period for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever varies from two to 14 days. While symptoms vary, typically there is a sudden onset of fever, chills, generalized aches and severe headache. In two to six days a rash appears. usually starting on the extremities and progressing to cover the entire body. Lyme disease is a ticktransmitted disease which occurs mainly from April to December in Central and Southern New Jersey. More than 70 percent of the cases appear in June or July. Lyme disease is also characterized by a rash which begins two to 14 days after a tick or "insect " bite
and in 45 percent of the cases is accompanied by. fever, malaise and fatigue and sometimes headache and stiff neck. The rash may look like a "target" and be warm, itchy. or tender. There may be pain or swelling of one or more of the large joints, especially the knees. The usual course of treatment is oral penicillin or tetracycline.
It is important to wear protective clothing and repellents when exposure to ticks is considered like ly. Persons and household pets with likely exposure to ticks should be examined once to twice daily and all ticks removed using forceps. Environmental use of pesticides is not considered effective except in very circumscribed areas of heavy tick infestation
