Wetlands Courses lit Mini-Ecology
STONE HARBOR - What is the difference between a horseshoe crab, spider crab„blue crab, hermit crab, fiddler crab or ^mole crab9 If trapped on an island, which could you eat? A giant scavanger hunt to find all of these and more marine animals will be part of the mini-ecology courses for youngsters in grades 3 to 6 available at Wetlands Institute this July. Four pre-school. two 1st and 2nd grade and kindergarten classes are filled to capacity, even though an extra class was added. Early registration is advised for the remaining classes as well as for\ the new Junior Naturalist f program available for 7th j and 8th graders in August, I THE FIVE-DAY mini-} ecology coursescy/ill held for f2\z hours each morning i|ndxwiH' feature seawater studies of salini«a»oici siuuica ui annui-
ty/ and^variance of t^fnperafure and oxygen ffom ocean to salt marsh. Afarine animals from oc^ap sand to jtidal creeks > ana marsh pannes will be located and identified. Salt marsh plant shapes will be taught via plant printing with tempura paints. Sediments of mud dnd sand will be dug and a special crafts day will focus on the food chain from the coast. Classes in grades 3-4 will be held July 16-20 and 13-17 of August; grades 5-6 will be held July 23-27 and Aug. 20-24. The Junior Naturalist Program will be presented for the first time Aug. 13 to 18. The pilot course will feature creative methods of teaching natural science to 7th and 8th graders.
PHYSICAL, ehemical and biological aspects of the environment will be explored not only through field tines/but also in laborato^y^xperiments. Observation of natural phenomena will provide a high school level of study. These 2'2 hour classes will be held for five days in early afternoon.
