I Station Hearing Irks MUA
SWAINTON - Officials I of the County Municipal I Utilities Authority, who have been working toward opening the solid waste transfer station in Middle, ^ Township early in July, are disturbed over the scheduling of a public hearing on June 25 by the State ' Department of Environmental Protection. They feel that the NJDEP's action is schedul ing a hearing on the operating permit may also I delay the opening of the facility that will serve the county's southern communities during the busy tourist months ahead. "Setting the hearing date only six days prior to our hoped-for opening compounds an already difficult transportation problem," Ted O'Neill, sdid waste manager, declared. "The solid waste haulers and municipal officials from the southern communities have had to truck material to Woodbine since May 15. when the new county landfill started operation." % THE MUA HAS respond ed to the problem by expanding the hours of operation but. according to O'Neill, the real solution lies in having the transfer station open and operating Any delay in the NJDEP Y regulatory review of the June 25 public hearing transcript would cause great harm to the citizens of Cape May County, say MUA officials These officials are urging municipal officials and private haulers to write, telephone or telegraph the Division of Solid Waste Management. NJDEP. to impress upon the state of ficials the poor liming of
the hearing and the necessity for a quick review and approval. •WHAT REALLY con cerns us is the fact that the NJDEP has had our application for an operating permit since Feb. 10." MUA Executive Director George Marinakis explained. "When we first filed it we noted particularly that in order to open the transfer station by early July we needed action as soon as possible. Now. four i months later, the state i schedules the hearing to oc- I cur as late as June 25." < Marinakis pointed out the Solid Waste Plan « Amendment approving the \ site for the landfill was ( adopted Feb. 18 and the En- c vironmental Impact State- t ment was approved March s 16. c
The operating permit hearing, he said, focuses on engineering and techic'al issues relating to the design of the transfer station. The facility, designed to save transportation costs for the county's southern municipalities, has been on a fast-track construction scehdule since February in spite of the wet spring weather. Located on Shumpike Roaa in Middle 'Township, the building will not be completely built by July 4 but. hopefully, will be operational, O'Neill said. "W'e must ask the state authorities to act as soon as possible on the permit,' O'Neill stated. "There is a critical need for this faciliby the 4th ef July to the shore communities."
