House OKs Study

WASHINGTON. D C. - The U.S. House of Representative has approved an amendment by Congressman Bill Hughes iD-NJi. which authorizes the federal Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of constructing an east -west superhighwaythrough South Jersey. Hughes said the feasibility study is needed to help resolve the growing transportation problems in South Jersey. He noted that a similar amendment by Sen. Frank Lautenberg < D NJ ) has just been approved by the Senate Public Works Committee, greatly enhancing the prospects for full Congressional approval of the study. Hughes said he and Sen Lautenberg offered the legislation at the federal level because the NewJersey Department of Transportation has twice rejected his requests to fund the study, and it can- I not be delayed much longer He also credited i Congressman James I Howard i D-NJ). Chairman J

of the House Public Works Committee, for his strong support of the project Hughes' amendment, which was approved unanimously as part of the Surface Transportation Act, directs the U.S. Secretary of Transporta tion to study the feasibility of constructing an east west superhighway, linking the Delaware Memorial Bridge with the Atlantic City Expressway and other north-south highways in South Jersey. The amend ment provides up to 5200,000 for the study, and sets a one-year deadline for the DOT to submit its report and recommenda tions on the issue to Congress. $25,000 Win GREAT GORGE - R.
