Hollywood Boulevard ' 'Warner Brothers) "H" Thaqks to the early summer smash. Gremlins. Joe Dante is a very successful director. But this fame didn't come overnight, as Dante has worked hard for his first blockbuster. In the

past he's come close tc commercial siftcess, most I notably The Howling and I Piranha, but he's also had I his flops. 1 Dante co-directed Hollywood Boulevard with Allan Arkush (Rock & Roll High School Get Crazy)

and the enu result is a strong, witty comedy that deserved a much better fate Basically. Hollywood Boulevard is a spoff of lowbudget. exploitation movies. It is 'fast, adventurous and consistently funny. What makes it special is the^k't Dante and Arkufeh

i aren't putting down the t genre of exploitation films. because that's their first I love. No. they're just able to i laugh at themselves and it's that quality that makes ; Hollywood Boulevard a brilliant piece of satire, i Even in this early feature, i Dante shows a style that's more fully developed in The Howling < probably his best work so far> and Gremlins. He can combine humor with eerie horror and make it gel. Joe Dante has a very bright future ahead of him. Q I A I) R O P li E X I A ' RCA/Columbia ) "R" Based on The Who's rock opera Quadrophenia concerns itself with England's mid-60's mod movement and how it fitted in with society. It's a cold film that paints a very bleak picture of life. The mods alienated themselves from the established and lived in a world of scotters, pills, music, and fighting, and Quadrophenia vividly shows, their anger and frustration. To Kill A Clown (Media) "R" Those who love Alan Alda's gentle, comic approach on M.A.S.H. will be surprised at this film. Alda i portrays a deranged, crippled military man who tortures a young, vacationing couple. » The atmosphere of this jpicture is extremely tense, thanks to Alda's fine performance and the subtle direction of George Bloomfield. It might make some people uneasy, but it's still worth seeing. The Hunger 1 MGM/U.A ) -R' This stylistic artsy "vampire" film has nice special effects and three talented stars (Catherine Deneuve. David Bowie and Suyan Sarandon) but it's still null and boring Director Tony Scott has worked hard to make it visually expressive. yet the story-line is weak We never care about what happens in this film, because the characters are never worth caring about ' Class of 1984 (Vestroni R" .Mark Lester's action

film is really an updated version of Blackboard Jungle. It deals with the horrors of school gangs and how kids can frighten adults into submission. As a fantasy/horror picture Class of 1984 is ex-

I citing, scary, and never i dull. Unfortunately, director Lester seems to have trouble deciding if this is a futuristic, science fiction tale or a slightly twisted observation of what's going on in American cities today
