TRENTON — Transportation Commissioner John P Sheridan Jr has reemphasized the importance to Cape May County of the Legislature's approval of the $3. 3 billion Transportation Trust Fund program proposed by Governor Thomas H. Kean. "Without this four-year program, many of the projects for Cape May County will be continued to be delayed for lack of ade quale funding.' Sheridan • said. | "A sound transportation ■ system is absolutely fun3 damental to the continued economic growth of New Jersey," Sheridan said. 'The citizens of this state
jiave already invested more than $42 billion in the highway and transit network that each of us depends on day after day and we all share the responsibility for its adequacy and safety." SHERIDAN ALSO noted i that, in addition to address|ing the $3 billion | maintenance, rehabilita- } (ion and construction : backlog during the 1980s. |he governor's program could be ^implemented without increasing taxes. A capital funds available for highway and bridge projects on the state highway system. In Cape May County, for example, improvements to Route 47 in Middle Township and Route 147 in North W i I d-w o o d . rehabilitation of the Route 50 bridge over NJ Transit J Middle and Lower Townships i. *the Route 47 and 147 bridges over Grassy Sound (Middle Township and North Wildwood) and the four Structures carrying Route / $2 over Beach. Rainbow |nd Elbow Thorofares and Ship Channel (Somers Jfoint and Ocean City) |.ould be among those j projects. £ ANOTHER essential j$iece of the .program involves the substitution of a S35 million state appropriation for Federal Aid Urban System (FAUS) funds now ^available for county projects. All currently back logged FAUS funds would remain available and no county would receive less tharfrhe level of funding received under the FAUS program in 1984 Even those counties ' which were not included in the current EAUS program would be guaranteed a minimum of $300,000 annually for county and municipal projects The substitution of state dollars for federal funds would enable counties and municipalities to complete more projects than before since local governments will no longer be saddled with time and moneyconsuming federal regulations for project design and construction In addition, over the next four years the Trust Fund would provide $50 million for state match for available federal public transit capital funds and $25 million for resurfacing.
