Dear Ruth: Five years ago, I joined a diet club and lost 31 pounds. I felt good, looked good and kept the weight off until a year ago.
I've tried other diets on my own with little success. They end up being too expensive. I ary now a "junkaholic" and can't
y seem to be able to help i. myself. Off The Track DearO.TT: We humans a grow tired of things even t though they work. You found a method that worked for you but you needed more. Don't hate yourself, we are all guilty at times of treating a symptom instead of its cause. However, writing down your problem has helped you. The process of going from rambling thoughts to committing words on paper helped to clarify your direction. Expense maybe a valid excuse for not selecting some diets, but junk food is also expensive. And most costly of all is the drop in self-esteem that occurs as unwanted pounds are gained. Get the junk food out of your system. Stay away from it for about five days and the cravings cease. For help with this, join a weight group. (Some have no dues or fees.) Try to remember that the stomach pains you're having just mean that stored calories are being consumed. Monitor your weight on a regular basis. Reward yourself for losses by small acts 01 kindness, i.e., a flower on your night table gives you a / lift; don't choose an unneeded snack ! Step up your exercise program. Just walking briskly is great exercise. Try to make mealtimes ' pleasurable occasions Chew each bite thoroughly ft and relax between forkfuls. ? Pretend you are dining with someone special to you ( Robert Bedford'' > and use your best table manners Soon this gentle eating becomes habit and hunger is satisfied with small portions of food, eaten with much greater enjoyment. Dear Ruth: I started on a program about six years ago and had taken off 73 pounds aj> of last January I've gained four pounds since then. My fear is that I will start gaining again I'm 5 feet 4 inches, age 68 and want to get down to 120 pounds 1 need ideas to achieve and maintain this goal Struggling Dear Struggling: Congratulations on such! a dramatic reduction hp weight ! I'm sure you've hit plateaus in the past'~Sttc years where, no matter how hard you try. the scale will not drop one ounce You may be Qn one right . now. Or. it could be that your ✓ system has reached its "set point.'" Current thinking is that, like it or not. this set point is pretty reliably sought and kept by our bodies. One way to successfully alter this is by an increase in exercise while continuing to take a few calories. This is your choice. You say that you fear that you are going to gain weight again. Don't be afraid. You cannot gain weight without consuming ;__more calories than you need. You are in control of - what you put into your mouth. Gaining weight is not a passive experience Taking weight . off cannot be. either. We actively indulge in excess food to gain weight and we must active-
> ly refrain from it to lose weight. So have no fear, the ; unwanted pounds will not i return without your help. I If you have a question. write to Ruth A. Wanberg. I c/o of this newspaper. For a personal reply, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope f!
