July Marks 20th Anniversary of Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

Ferry Celebrating 20th Birthday

CAPE MAY — The fleet of four modern, radarequipped bay liners ply between Cape May, New Jersey and Lewes,

Delaware. The 16-mile distance Across the mouth of the Delaware Bay is covered in 70 minutes. It eliminates the last major water barrier in a coastal highway system between Maine and Florida. Vehicles discharging at Cape May proceed to New York and New England via the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike or the Jfew York Thurway. Vehicles destined for shore points use the Garden State Parkway south to Exit 4A. Vehicles discharging at Levwes connect with Highways 113 and 13 via Delaware 14 and 18 and complete the coastal route (Ocean Hiway) via the Chesapeake Bay bridge — Tunnel. Chronology: February. 1963 — The Delaware River and Bay Authority, responsible for all present and future crossings of the Delaware River and Bay connecting the States of Delaware and New Jersey, is formally organized. Votes to up-date existing feasibility studies of the proposed Cape May — Lewes Ferry. June. 1963 — Authority votes to establish Cape May — Lewes Ferry and Twin Span to present Delaware Memorial Bridge and proceed with financing and construction of both projects. . August. 1963 — With this in mind, the Authority purchases the four largest ferry vessels from Virginia Ferry Corporation at a price of $3,300,000 and renames them SS Delaware, SS New Jersey. SS Cape May and MV Cape Henlopen. - DECEMBER.' 1963 - Contract awarded for construction of breakwater at Lewes Terminal. March - April,' 1964 - Contracts awarded for con-, struction of terminal facilities and buildings at Cape May and Lewes. April, 1964 - $103,000,000 revenue bond issue sold by Authority, of which approx- . imately $13,000,000 is earmarked for establishing the Cape May — Lewes. Ferry System. t June. 1964 - Contract J awarded for construction"' of the L^es Terminal Building. June, 1964 — Dedication ceremonies held at Lewes and Cape May.

July, 1964 — Ferry seri vice opens to public. The ferry has provided continuous transportation between lower Delaware and lower New Jersey since i that time. JULY, 1972 — The Authority decided to invest in new shallow-draft vessels for the ferry service. This was done to reduce maintenance on the vessels, to reduce or eliminate dredging costs and to provide newer and more efficient service to patrons, i Contract signed with Todd Shipyard Corp., of Houston, Tex., for construction of the new shallow-draft ferry vessels at a total cost of $1 1 ,720,000. February, 1973 — The commissioners voted to name the three new bayliners under construction the MV Delaware. flagship of fleet, the MV New Jersey and the MV Twin Capes. July. 1973 - SS New Jersey departed Cape May terminal enroute to new owner, the Mascony Transport and Ferry Service, Inc., New Bedford Mass. JUNE. 1 9 7 4 — Ceremonies were held at Lewes and Cape to dedicate the first of the three new bayliners, MV Delaware August. 1975 — Sale of remaining original fleet. SS Delaware. SS Cape May and MV Cape Hanlopen to Mascony Transport and Ferry Service. January. 1979 — Contract signed with Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drjdock Corp.. Norfolk. Va.. for construction of a new ferry vessel at a contract cost of $10,754,920. June, 1981 j- Dedication of MV New Del. the fourth ferry vessel in a ceremony at the I>ewes. Del. ferry terminal Thi6 vessel has since been renamed MV Cape Henlopen. The ferry service has demonstrated its importance as a transportation link between the sister states. The resortorientated economy of the ;• lower portions of Delaware t and New Jersey and the impact of casino operations in Atlantic City are conditions which accentuate^lJe importance of the crossing to the eastern seaboard area.

May Flow On Ferry Tops 1983 CAPE MAY -i During May, traffic on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry increased by 862 vehicles and 2,040 passengers from May, 1983, according to David S. Chapman, general manager of the ferry. Ferry traffic for May, 1984, was 22,874 vehicles and 59,526 passengers compared to 22,012 vehicles and 57,486 passengers for May, 1983, an increase of 3.9 percent for vehicles and an increase of 3.6 percent for passengers. For the twelve month period ended May, 31, 1984 traffic was 281,016 vehicles and 872,226 passengers compared to 269,036 vehicles and 829,243 passengers for the 12-month period ended May 31, 1983. Stamp on Opening Of Ferry COURT HOUSE - The Cape Stamp Club is sponsoring a cover to commemorate the opening of the Cape May — Lewes Ferry 20 years ago. The covers will be franked with the new Seaway stamp to be issued June 26 and will be cancelled July 1 in Cape May and in Lewes, Del. They will have a printed cachet. Anyone wishing one or more covers from either Cape May of Lewes can place an order by writing to: Cape Stamp Club, P.O. Box 217, Tuckahoe, N.J. 08250. PURCHASERS should designate how many covers and which cancellations are wanted. The cost for each is $1. with a selfj addressed stamped envelope. The Cape Stamp Club n*eets monthly at the County Library in Court House. Anyone having an interest in stamps or covers is welcome to visit at the regular meeting.
