Water, water everywhere and lots of / drops to drink. The Ancient I Mariner will, I hope, \ forgive my literary license, but water is the greatest resource of the New Jersey Pinelands. Unlike the reservoirs of northern New Jersey where billions of gallons of stored water can be easily surveyed, water in the Pines is hardly noticeable. Contained within the sandy soils of the Cohansey Aquifer, however, lies an estimated 17 trillion gallons of some of the purest water in the world. It is also among the most susceptible to pollution. WHEN I firft learned that the Cohansey Aquifer contains 17 trillion gallons of water, I tried to visualize how much that really is. This is not an easy task, because one is certainly not used to seeing that amount of water in a single place. An imaginative person on the Pinelands Commission staff described it in ways that I found intriguing. Seventeen' trillion gallons, he saifa, would cover the entjty State of New Jersey to a depth of 10 feet. It would also provide 272 trillion eight-ounce glasses of water — enough to quench the thirst of every man, woman and child in the world 68,000 times. The relationship of this vast amount of water to the ecology and the economy of the Pinelands is a close one. This resource is critical in maintaining native Pinelands plants, and animals, and farmers here depend on its continued availability tp sustain their crops.

/ Major withdrawals of ( Cohansey Aquifer water to 1 locations outside "of the V Pinelands would seriously ~harm the Pinelands ecology and economy. THE AQUIFER is also sensitive to pollution. The sandy soils of the Pinelands do not remove contaminants ' that move downward through them. The aquifer is close to the surface in many locations, and contaminants are discharged almost directly into the ground water. Only recently have we begun to pay attention to this valuable treasure. In the past, hazardous and toxic materials were buried in the sandy soils, and houses with septic •symems were built on very small lots. While news reports about toxic waste dump discoveries are common, the many cases of homeowners' wells being condemned because of effluent from a neighbor's septic system are rarely publicized. It is always a good practice in the Pines to have your well checked for nitrate-nitrogen if you live in an area served by septic systems, as most of us do Ten parts per million of this contaminant is the maximum felt to be i drinkable under federal and state standards. MOST OF the new regulations that affect 1 building in the Pinelands are designed to protect this ground water. ISarger lot sizes are required so that contaminants from, septic systems are properly diluted. Hazardous and toxic waste disposal is now banned in the Pinelands. and older landfills are being closed. The intent of Pinelands regulations is not to protect a water supp ly for people that live far away. The regulations are in place to ensure that farmers can continue to farm with adequate water supplies and that you and I and our children won't have to look elsewhere for water because ours is no longer pure.
