j, 1 By LIBBY DEMP FORREST I BOOM BOOMgothe II fireworks ... tonight, tomorrow night. H and into the weekend. Some displays will ■ be the officii ones, some not. Be careful ■ if you're doing your own. J *** j I Are you ready for the 'dog days'? }■ They're coming. They start on July 3 and ■ last until August 11. The dog of the name ■ is Sirus, the Dog Star, which rises with ■ the sun during this period. It is a popular | jl notion that this is the hottest and mug- ■ giest part of the year, and this is often jl true. There is not truth, however, in the H superstition that ddss are likely to go jl mad from the heathy I Growing things are at the height of I their activity. Corn is being cultivated for H the third or even the fourth time. !■ "Harvest" apples are appearing in the j I market and the earliest sweet corn is II ready for the table. So are "broilers," ■ new potatoes, and early tomatoes. Red ■ and black raspberries are now getting |H ripe everywhere. I • •" i j This is the season for, hand concerts. ! I It's a great tradition from long ago when jl families used to gather1 during the sum [I mer months to hear the music that comes jl from the heart. Years back John Phillip tl Sousa was a frequent band conductor in ■ Cape May leading his famolis marching ■ band. Oh, the sdasohs change and the ■ bands come and. go, but their music [I lingers ... and families still gather to ;l hear the robust sounds stirring summer .I evenings. |i *** / i : When it comes to stirring, here's this I week's roundup of some of our favorite j I restaurants -where good foods are being 'I stirred this very moment: ' AVALON'S SIDEWALK CAFE. SumI mer, to us, means salads, plenty of fresh ; I fruit and of course, ice cream — in all its jl varieties and imaginary concoctions. We I don't make any secret about one of the ; I places we head for on a summer evening ■ — Avalon's Sidewalk Cafe, which carries jl on the traditions of an old-fashioned ice jl cream parlor. j j The Cafe loves to do fruit creations j I ( including our favorite Fruit Combo j I Supreme — five freshly cut fruits of the j I day^erved with our choice of raspberry H^Bduce or yogurt dressing). Waffles and sandwiches are another favorite here ■ The desserts are so good we always have ■ ■ a problem making up our minds. Last I weekend we devoured a Creme de Men-
the sundae ( Bassett's French vanilla ice cream and pear slices topped with green creme de menthe, and served with a cookie). Avalon's Sidewalk Cafe is located at 26th St. at the Bay, Avalon. *«*
T.J. SCANLON'S. T.J. Scanlon's prides « itself on the welcome mat it puts out for familes. There is something on the menu for everyone (and we mean everyone — even the fussiest child). We know this from experience — because everyone in
our family isn't easy to please. Open dai- I ly at 96th and 3rd Avenue. Stone Harbor. I T. J. Scanlon's also offers late night enter- I tainment. Breakfast at affordable prices I from 8 to 11:15 a m ED ZABERER'S. Food still comes in lj those memorably large portions at Ed lj Zaberer's Restaurant in North Wildwood. I j Honestly. Year after year Ed Zaberer is I j the king of the old-time shore places we I j like to remember from the past. j No matter how many times we go back I to Zaberer's we find those thick, juicy I j succulent cuts or ribs, still prepared as I • always. Everything is king-sized here, in- I j eluding the drinks. The homemade I pastries and desserts are everything H we'd give a right arm for. The setting is I zany.but beautiful — Tiffany lamps, old I portraits. Christmas lights, antiques. I posters, nostalgia. We come for the food, I of course, but have to pause and admire I everything when we aine at Zaberer's. H You will too. Always affordable. j THE ISLAND CAFE. The Island Cafe. I on Ocean Drive at 10th Street. Avalon has 1 1 a chef with the finest credentials. He is a I i graduate of the Culinary Institute o$ I j America — so if you've been searching I for food that is out of the ordinary, the I Island 1 afe should be a frequent stopping I ! place. We enjoyed a superb dinner last Sun- H day, making the Scallops Wanda our I j choice. (The tender sea scallops are 1 1 sauteed with fresh mushrooms and ar I j tichocke hearts, then simmered in white I j wine). Hubby wanted something from the I j Landlubbers side of the menu, so he I ! chose the Chicken Breast Sorrento I j (chicken breast gently sauteed with I j onions, tomatoes and fresh mushrooms. I ' simmered in white wine) A pleasant spot I for breakfast and luncheon, we are im- I pressed with the bottomless coffee cup I served at breakfast time HARBOR LIGHT II. Harbor Light II is I refreshingly seashore for those who love I an unflustered atmosphere, who want a I decent breakfast at an affordable price I j and a lovely dinner without having to go H to the ends of the earth to get it Harbor Light II £Iso features a pungent I bakery and seafood market where you I can select the freshest -fish for your din- I ner at home.
