One of the best sources for 60 s soul music is the San Francisco label Solid Smoke. They put out wonderful reissues that hot only feature excellent music but also informative liner notes from top writers and obscure photos Each release is a gem worth owning. Due to some business problems, things were quiet at Solid Smoke, but theyire now^being distributed by the Los Angeles Rhino label, a company that's earned a good reputation for its classy reissues. This* merging should mean we're in for a lot of great soul records in the coming months. Here are some of their recent goodies. . THE CAPITOLS were known primarily for their upbeat, dancyTsound. They had one monester hit with "Cool Jerk" and a few A others that charted but are H now forgotten. No Silly I Smirk ... Do The Cool Jerk ( indicates the group could t do more than carbon copies \ of their hit. In fact. The^ Capitols were quite adept at a smooth, soulful R&B vocal sound It's sad seeing the potential of The Capitols was never fullfilled. But. at • least, they had one top-ten smash Dpoii Jackson was another performer with one big hit. "Love Makes The World Go Round, who never was able to findthe fame he deserved. This album is a rare treat, as ! each track benefits from Jackson's smooth delivery and the adventurous production of 01 lie McLaughlin. Maybe he y didn't have a string of hiLs. f but His Greatest Recor- [ dings is proof that his I obscurity wasn't due to y lack of talent jj SOLID SMOKE has put jj out James Brown albums *, before < all soul fans should buy Live and Lowdown At y The Apollo, Vol. l ), but The n Federal Years ... Part One " and Part Two might be the best yet These sides capture a youthful James Brown who seems to be on the verge of exploding with' emotion Even the ballads indicate a man possessed with firey passion. It would be virtually im possible to single out a couple of songs for their merits, when each number if such a treat These might not be James Brown's best known songs, but these two albums are hot. Take my word for it After getting these reissues, you'll surely want I Detroit Gold Vol 1 and I Detroit Gold Vol. ^2 Both are ^ I chock full of stirring. I soulful performances by o" I the likes of Barbara Lewis. I Jimmy •Soul" Clark. I Fires tones, Deon Jackson. I The Fabulous Counts, etc. I These two albums show I that Motown wasn't the only Detroit label that could recognize talent, as all I these performers were inkI ed to the Moira, Carla, or Karen companies. If you can't, locate Solid Smoke's reissues in your favorite store, try writing to Solid Smoke. P.O. Box 22372, San Francisco, CA. 94122.
