' Night in Venice ' Scheduled July 14

OCEAN CITY - Over 100 boats, 300 decorated homes and approximately 100,000 spectators make "Night In Venice" one of thAmost colorful boat and bay nome celebrations in the world. Scheduled for July 14, starting 6 p.m. on Great Egg Harbor Bay, "Night In Venice" has been an integral part of Ocean City summers since the turn of the century. In the early 1900s. this resort held a parade which featured Philadelphia debutantes who were boated through bay front channels and greeted summer home owners. "Night In Venice", as it is known today, has been held continously since the early 1950s when it was inaugurated on a full scale by Capt. Jack Jernee. who headed the beach patrol, and Arthur Watkins. city public relations director. THE EVENT features competition for best decorated boats and bay \ front homes. Themes vary ^ from sports to politics but are normally humorous. Bleachers are set up along the bay. front street ends to accommodate the influx of visitors. This year's parade will i feature a special Cover- i nor's Division to^jonor the | current state administra- i tion's efforts to promote 1 tourism. Shore communities throughout SouthJersey have been invited to enter boats in the competi tion and to have their community leaders participate in the evening's activities. ' Govenor Thomas Kean is expected to attend and Sen James Hurley will be parade marshal. Vicoria < Schmidt, state director of 1 tourism, will also be an i honored guest. ' I THE COAST Guard t Group stationed at Cape 1 May will signal the beginning of -the parade by flying f three helicopters over the f route, which begins at the 1 Long Port Bridge and con- f i eludes at South 'Harbor. 1 The bay will be heavily 1 ' patrolled by Coast Guard I and Marine Police with all 1

boating regulations strictly enforced Heavy fines will be levied against violators. The Night in Venice Committee. headed by George Mimnagh, has been working on the celebration since the beginning of the year. Entry forms for the boat and home competition are now available from the Public Relations Office. City Hall, and many locations including marinas. There is no entry fee and prizes are awarded to the top three entries in each category. Special plaques for the Governor's Division have been designed and constructed by T. Jbhn Carey of Ocean City. Ajt awards ceremony will -fie held at the Intermediate School. 19th and Bay Avenue., following the parade. Night In Venice is sponsored by the city and Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Coast Guard, marine Police, and city police, fire and public works departments One of the highlights of the parade is the boat carrying Miss Night in Venice and her court. Miss Night in Venice is selected by the residents arid visitors who place money in boxes next to the contestants' photographs.
