Whaler's Cabin Is Focus of Festival

STONE HARBOR - When migratory whales in great numbers were frolicking in the Delaware Bay. seasonal fishing camps were established here by hardy whalers from Long Island who eventually settled in Cape May county. One such early whaler s cabin has been carefully reconstructed at Learning's Run Gardens on Route 9 in Swainton The cabin and its simple contents will be a new (ocus of the New Jersey Wings n Water Festival Sept. 15 and 16 this year. Owner Jack April constructed the one-room log building in the midst of the 20-acre wooded gardens, and maintains a vegetable and herb garden alongside Outbuildings and sheds house farm animals and several early breeds of chickens INSIDE THE one room

cabin, a salt marsh hay bed. rocking chair, cooking pots over the fireplace and handmade table are visual reminders of the simpler life of the late 1600's. Learning's Run. in those days, provided water access to Ludlam's Bay on the Atlantic April, a knowledgeable guide of the early whaler's life. says. "The whaler s story in south Jersey is a well kept secret. We enjoy showing visitors the cabin and early hazards of making a living in the 17th century. Most people don't realize that they raised peanuts, cotton and tabacco here: we discover new facts everyday " He will personally conduct many of the daily tours scheduled at 9:30. 11:30. 1:30 and 3:30 on both Saturday and Sunday. Sept. 15-1*6. IN ADDITION, the hum mingbird watch tours will be held at Learning's run Gardens during both days of the festival. More than two dozen theme gardens including a fernery are visible along the winding pathways. At the tour's end. a cooperage shed houses dried flowers available in bulk or already arranged Barrels were made here to cart whale oil to market Colonial gifts are also offered here The gardens are open from 9:30 to 5 daily until Oct 20 There is an admission charge, which will continue during the September festival, a benefit for the Wetlands Institute at Stone Harbor The institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to education and research, offers an observation tower, salt marsh trail. Wetlandia museum, lecture hall, and nature bookshop which are open from 10 to 4. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
