Microcomputers Aid Meter Reader
FOLSOM'-SoSlhtojpy Gas Company's team oTs^ meter readers will be per I forming their daily routes A throughout the utility's j seven-county service area f - with the assistance of hand- f held microcomputers beginning in December. This summer. Sou^n Jersey Gas will jtfart programming aneHesting the Itron DataCap H microcomputers, which will replace the company's existing meter reading system of recording customer data on paper documents. The hand-held device weighs about 2'_> pounds and contains 64,000 positions of memory. "The conversion to electronic meter reading will increase the accuracy of all * meter readings and help reduce estimated bills." stated William F. Ryan, president of South Jersey Gas. "We will be able to record more customer in- ~ formation at each location in the field," Ryan continued, "enhancing productivity and the quality of customer service." UTILIZING THE new hand-held device, meter readers will read meters by entering numbers into the microcomputer instead of on paper documents. The microcomputers will bd programmed to alert the meter readers to an excessively high or abnormally low reading at a particular location. This function permits immediate verification of the reading, reducing return trips for special and costly rereads.
The DataCap H \ microcomputer is en | vironmentally protected A against rain, humidity. f temperature changes and I is constructed to handle / daily use outdoors. Many ' problems caused by inclement weather will be reduced. Under the present system, when meter readers note readings or related customer informa tion on the paper documents, this informa tion is rejected by the scanner because of excessive moisture caused by rain or snow, or because the written data has been smeared V obliterated. Since the new microcomputers are weatherproof, this problem ~will be eliminated. DATA COLLECTED by the meter readers will be recorded within the microcomputer on both a ~ solid-state memory and a cassette tape. An estimated 300 meter readings can be recorded on each cassette. The microcomputers will be returned by the meter readers to the operating divisions at the end of each day. The cassettes will then be removed and transferred to the main computer site in Folsom for processing and billing. Cassette tapes containing customer information for the next day's rputes will then be transferred to divisional locations to be ready for meter readers the following morning. ™
