Each year at this time I tall* to you about those birds that nest on the beach Yes. a I'm going to talk to you again about the piping ploven. least tern and the black skimmer. The news this year appears to be good. These endangered species who ! share the beach with all our tourists and visitors seem to be doing very well. Although the storms of this past winter and spring were a hazard to human :|| houses near the beach, they were a help to the beach nesting birds because they deposit large amounts of broken shell on the beach The birds, particularly the ; terns and skimmers, like to nest among shell as it camoflages the nest and their young. I — Although it is too early for youqg terns and skimmers to be hatching, it isOhe >

peak of hatching for the piping plovers. A plover chick can best be identified by its close resemblance to a sandy-colored cotton buff on tooth picks. Should you see a creature matching this description running back and forth along the beach you wiirhave seen a newly hatched chick. It wilf be about four weeks before this cotton ball turns into an adult look-alike and during this period they cannot fly and are susceptible to predators. Anne Galli is a natural to be the author of "Jersey Cape Naturally." She is assistant director of the Wetlands Institute, a position that involves teaching, research and administration. An ornithologist, she is co-author of "The Wildlife of Cape May County." along with her. sister. Joan, and local environmental consultant J iseph L Lomax. She was written for numerous technical journals and last year worked . on a study concerning population and habitats of breeding piping plovers in Cape May County. In 1977, she received one of three national conservation awards presented by i

the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is a New Jersey native and for the last five years a Cape May County resident, which she calls "a special place." "I don't like sitting on the beaches." she said.
