NIGHT SHIFT " WARNER BROTHERS' " R"' It's extremely difficult some would say virtually impossible, for television stars to make the transition from the tube to L the big screen. The list of n failures far outnumbers r those who've succeeded. Still, it's a crime that Night Shift didn't make more of a splash, as it's a very tunny picture. The plot centers on two guys " Henry Winkler and Michael Keaton) who work the all-night shift at NewYork's morgue. Keaton is an outrageous character who hits upon the idea of running a call: girl business through the morquc As can be expected the whole thing becomes a zany mess, with Keaton giving one of the finest comedy performances in recent years. He's not the whole show, though, as Henry Winkler and Shelley "Cheers' l.ong are equally as impressive, directed by Ron Howard I who along with his recent smash Splash — proves he has the knack for directing fast paced comedies* FADE TO BLAC/f "Medial "R" Here's a horror film that works in spots but never does live up to its lull potential. Dennis C hristopher plays a mean, bland kid who is obsessed by film. So much so that he lives the lives of various stars. He finally goes over the edge and starts to commit murders, while impersonating some of his idols. What holds it back is the lack of action. Farts ol Fade To Black are slow enough to lose the viewer's attention, and. unless one is a true horror buff, the parts that work won't be nearlyenough to save it. It's not a bad film by any means. t>u. Fade To Black definitely promised more. LET'S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER "Embassy) "PG" This is. byfar. one of the better concert documentaries of a rock band This captures in all its glory w hat The Roll ing Sones are like onstage Songs from various
r shows in different American cities are pieced together to give a larger . than life view of the spec- " tacle of playing stadiums to • thousands ol people The > Stones prove they might be\ f in their -lo's. but they can > still rock with the best of them In fact. Mick dagger 1 looks better than he did 20 '■ years ago "thanks to consi tant exercise) and he's in fine voice, i For those who are lookI ing for sordid details of touring, you won't find them here This is strictly a showcase of various perfori mances to give the effect of i one show. Backstage/hotel dirt isn't even hinted at. just good musical performances and thousands of kids who obviously enjoyed themselves. THE RUTLES: ALL YOU NEED IS CASH "Pacific Arts) "PG" This made tor television satire of the history ol the Beatles is now on video tape and it's a must for anyone who wants a good laugh. Director/ writer/ act or Kric Idle is relentless as he pokes fun at the Fab Four as well as the 60s in general. Yet. his jokes are so obviously tongue-in-cheek. one could never take offense. In fact. George Harrison even acts in^ne film. A better parody-, is Mark Shipper's excellent book Paper hack Writer, but All You Need Is Cash is a close second.
