House OKs Cape Beach Funds

WASHINGTON, DC. — . The House of Representatives has approved legislation which authorizes the construction of high priority water projects across the country, in- . eluding the long-awaited Cape May beach restoration project sponsored by Congressman Bill Hughes (D-NJ). In addition to the' Cape May beach project, the legislation includes 11 other projects authored by Hughes which address various fUfod control, beach restoration and »v navigational needs throughout South Jersey. inrouKiiuui ouuui . t

Thev are among some *300 projects nationwide authorized for -construction under»the Water Resources Development Act, which passed' the House Friday, June 29. THE SOUTH Jersey lawmaker said he is especially pleased with the approval of the Cape May beach restoration project. This comprehensive program is designed to restore the badly eroded beaches in Cape May City, shore up the nearby U.S.^fcoast Guard Training Center, and help protect Lower Township and Cape May Point from flooding. "The tragic, beach erosion in Cape May has robbed one of America's premiere seashore resorts of its.most precious natural asset,"' Hughes said. "The federal government is responsible for causing this erosion, and the residents and business community in Cape May have waited many years for the government to repay this debt.

These projects were designed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1960's to stabilize the beaches and keep the inlets open for commercial \ fishermen and recreational boaters. Finally, the legislation authorizes the construction of specially designed, lowcost flood control projects in six communities along the Delaware Bay. They include Reeds Beach and •Pierces point in Cape May County.
