crease the chances of out-of-state motorists' paying /the same surcharge New Jersey drivers must pay » for drunk driving. "New Jersey is gaining recognition as one of the toughest states in the nation when it comes to cracking down on drunk driving," Hurley declared. "According to recent statistics from the state police, we have been successful in decreasing the number of drunk drivers on our roadways, thus saving many lives in the process. "HOWEVER, in order to ensure continued success in this war on drunk drivers, we must give the Division of Motor Vehicles the power it needs to collect surcharges from out-of-state drivers who violate .our laws." Hurley continued. "New Jersey is a corridor state. We want out-of-state drivers to know that if they drive in New Jersey while intoxicated, they will have to pay a hefty price. Hurley's bill would give the Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles authority to take civil action against any out-of-state resident convicted of drunk driving who fails to pay a surcharge to the state. The drunk driving surcharges collected by the state are placed in the Joint Underwriters Association to help defray the cost of insuring high-risk motorists.
